Crynodeb
Maternal Mental Health Services are being delivered across South Yorkshire providing care and
support for women and birthing people experiencing mental health difficulties directly arising from
or related to their maternity/birth experience.
We have been commissioned to provide peer support to women and birthing people as a
component of the birth trauma pathway of the maternal mental health services across South
Yorkshire.
Specialist Maternal Mental Health Midwives across South Yorkshire undertake Childbirth reviews for
women who request a debrief following their birth experience and, also offer onward referral to
Maternal Mental Health Psychology for women who are experiencing trauma symptoms.
This a bespoke perinatal mental health peer support offer, offering support to women who
experience distress around the maternity/birth experience and those who are experiencing trauma
symptoms whilst they are waiting for specialist assessment/therapy.
This peer support offer is a component of the stepped care model of South Yorkshire Maternal
Mental Health services which requires collaboration across the maternity/perinatal mental health
network, including Specialist Maternal Mental Health Midwives and Maternal Mental Health
Psychology and Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Teams.
The role
The Birth Trauma Peer Support Worker will provide peer support to women and partners who have
self-referred or have been referred to Light in relation to distress around their birth experience or
who have experienced birth trauma.
You will use your own lived experience of trauma associated with pregnancy/childbirth in a positive
way to support and encourage others on their own recovery journeys. This will include use of
appropriate self -disclosure to provide inspiration and hope to people using the service.
You will develop effective working relationships with health professionals delivering Maternal
Mental Health Services across South Yorkshire.
You will work collaboratively with service users and other service providers to enable the service
user to connect into community resources, building resilience and improving wellbeing. You will also
ensure that services are tailored to individual needs facilitating equity of access
You will be joining a team of PNMH Peer Support Workers and Peer Support Co-ordinators working
across South Yorkshire delivering PNMH Peer Support Services always acting to promote the vision
of Light. You will also be required to provide perinatal mental health peer support contributing to
Light’s comprehensive PNMH Peer Support Service
Peer Support Practice
Deliver a range of 1:1 individual birth trauma peer support sessions in person, by telephone,
videocall or by email/text as agreed with the service user.
Model principles of hope, recovery and self -belief in all aspects of work with parents,
parents to be and other family members.
Share coping, self-help and self-management techniques as appropriate with
parents/parents to be and other family members.
Plan and deliver birth trauma peer support group sessions ensuring the venue is warm
welcoming and risk management controls are in place.
Contribute to the ongoing development of targeted peer support offers related to distress
around pregnancy/birth experience
Participate in engagement activities to enable timely access to birth trauma peer support.
Hold a caseload of service users who are receiving 1:1 support / group support.
Comply with your agreed job plan ensuring it is up to date with your current caseload.
Ensure the acquisition of service user feedback to contribute to service improvement and
development.
