Crynodeb

The Urology Department team comprises 1 Associate Professor, 3 Honorary Senior Lecturers and 25 Consultants and 2 Associate Specialists. Special interests within the department include the management of patients requiring partial nephroctomy, retroperitoneal node dissection, renal tumours invading the cava, robotic radical prostectomy and cystectomy and neobladders. Around 170 laparoscopic kidney operations, 200 robotic prostate operations and 60 cystectomy procedures are performed each year and the unit performs the full range of general urological operations. The unit also provides support for gynaecological colleagues at the Birmingham Women's Hospital, who undertake major abdominal and pelvic surgery. The DaVinci robotoc surgery programme is well established for prostate surgery, the partial robotic partial nephrectomy service is beginning in September 2022 and the robotic cystectomy programme is planned to begin in 2023. In addition to a weekly MDT meeting there is a 'tracker' meeting which ensures all patients under the care of the MDT and currently receiving treatment are reviewed by the team each week. The urology service is supported by 7 clinical nurse specialists, and the unit comprises a single ward. The unit works as an integrated and flexible unit, cross covering operating days, Ward Rounds and clinics, MDTs, emergencies and holidays. There are close working relationships between all surgical specialties as all surgical wards are in close proximity to each other. Joint consultant operating between specialties is common practice within the hospital. Day case surgery lists take place within the Ambulatory Care Department of the New Hospital. Most endoscopy, some clinics and all elective in-patient operating takes place on the QEH site.
