Internship Role Profile – Digital Forensics

If you are a university student, expecting a 2:1 or higher, in Digital Forensics, you may be interested in one of our internships.

The duration of the internship will be 12 months and provides an excellent opportunity to gain insights into life and work in an operational Digital Forensic Unit. We’ll provide you with challenging assignments – and all the support you’ll need to make the most of the experience.

Digital Forensics Intern

This internship offers the chance to gain hands-on experience with a variety of tasks and projects in a dynamic cybercrime environment. The intern will not only hone their practical skillset, but also gain an understanding of how forensic examination of digital technology can assist in the prevention and identification of criminal activity.

You will gain valuable experience in digital forensics and crime investigation. The goal of digital forensics is to examine digital media in a forensically sound manner with the aim of identifying, preserving, recovering, analysing, and presenting facts about the digital information. The candidate will need to be highly computer literate, particularly with experience of computer forensic programs (such as XRY, Cellebrite, Axiom, Encase).


The role will involve

Learning about the cybercrime department.
Receiving and documenting exhibits and following exhibit handling guidelines.
Imaging computer drives.
Collecting forensic evidence using specialist tools.
Investigation and analysis of collected data.
Attendance at search warrants.
Preparation of exhibits for digital forensic examination including dismantling and removing digital storage.
Acquiring the contents of digital storage using proprietary software.
Extraction of mobile devices.

Requirements

A strong interest in digital forensics, digital technology, and crime investigation.
A detailed knowledge of computer architecture and operating systems.
Fastidious attention to detail.
Advanced research methods.
Well organised, self-motivated and ability to work independently.
Accurate with figures and spreadsheets and strong IT skills.
Must have entry and exit counselling sessions with Force Welfare Department.
Must be vetted by Gwent Police.

Please note: This internship commences July 2025 (end of).

To be eligible for the internship, candidates must be studying for an undergraduate degree and looking for a ‘sandwich’ placement. This internship is not suitable for postgraduate students.
