Senior Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine withEchocardiography
We are excited to offer an opportunity for a SCF role at ST3 + who wishes to gain further experience ofEchocardiography in Intensive Care working within the setting of a large London teaching hospital. The Royal Free has a busy 24 hour Heart Attack Centre and receives 420 admissions per year that require Intensive Care support.
The post is split between clinical shifts working on the Intensive Care, and part dedicated time provided to help the post holder undertake training in echocardiography and achieve certification of their skills.
We would welcome candidates from a wide variety of clinical backgrounds including Medicine, Anaesthesia, and Emergency medicine. Airway skills are not specifically required but 3months ICU experience is expected as clinical shifts would be worked on the registrar rota. You will be well supported by our dedicated team of 24 Intensive Care Consultants for your clinical role and our Consultant Echocardiography Teaching Faculty for your echocardiography learning.

We admit over 2800 patients each year and senior medical cover is provided by 24 Consultants, who provide a 24-hour cover worked in blocks to provide continuity of care.
The post is for 12 months based at the Royal Free Hospital site in Hampstead, London.

Main duties of the job
The Intensive Care department at the Royal Free is recognised by FICM for training in Intensive Care Medicine at all levels. In participating in the clinical activities on the ICU, the post holder will expand on their experience of:
• Resuscitation of the sick patient
• Communication with the multi-disciplinary team
• Criteria for admission and discharge from critical care
• An EBM approach to, and an application of care bundles, to the management of critically ill patients.
• Recognition and management of the critically ill patient
• Recognition and management of acute medical emergencies
• Supporting the sick patient to prevent further deterioration and hence the need for admission to Intensive Care
• Circulatory support, advanced respiratory support and renal replacement therapies
• Practical procedures including arterial and venous cannulation, the use of ultrasound for procedures
• The interpretation of cardiac output monitoring used in intensive care
• The management of patients following complex major surgery
• Identification of patients who will benefit from Intensive Care
• Management of complex ethical issues and the delivery of difficult news to relatives
There is ample opportunity to become involved in non-clinical activities aligned to an interest in echocardiography and cardiology within the Intensive Care.
