A medical education fellowship is designed for trainees at FY2 level and above who want to make a commitment to education as part of their career. Suitable candidates should wish to build on their personal teaching experience, develop expertise in education theory and practice, and undertake supervised educational research. The post holder will have a designated educational mentor who will oversee their development. Although an enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central to the post, as will engagement with educational issues around providing undergraduate training. Fellows are supported to develop a sustained commitment to education within
their clinical career. The post holder will be encouraged to undertake an educational qualification, such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, with some funding available towards this. Each post includes the opportunity for one half day for clinical work, the nature of which is flexible and will align with your future career plans. In addition there may be opportunities to take part in the on-call rota, which would attract an additional paid supplement.
The Undergraduate Teaching Fellows provide teaching and support to Imperial College London medical students & Brunel Medical Students at all stages of training on their clinical placements at Hillingdon Hospital NHS Trust. Teaching primarily covers both medical and surgical topics and is delivered as a combination of clinical skills, simulation courses, lectures, small group tutorials and bedside teaching. The Fellows will also be involved in supporting the clinical teams in specialty departments for example critical care, paediatrics and obstetrics & gynaecology. Post holders will also provide pastoral care for Medical students at Hillingdon Hospital.

The post holder will have the opportunity to take part in educational research activities, centred on the training of undergraduate students but including other groups of learners. These options are aligned with existing research activity and include (but are not confined to) themes such as evaluation of student or doctor teaching programmes, multidisciplinary teaching and learning, developing patient-focused simulation, the concept of ‘excellence’ in teaching, clinical skills acquisition, wellbeing and patient safety attitudes within the trust. It is anticipated that the post holder will generate publishable outputs, including conference presentations and publications in peer reviewed medical and educational journals.
