Summary
The post holder will be accountable for their own actions without direct supervision and accountable for actions of unqualified staff. Responsible for day-to-day clinical checks as part of a team and delivers a high standard of clinical care. Responsible for compiling the staff rota for approval by the Theatre Manager and ensuring safety and cost-effective utilisation of the nursing workforce. Responsible for advising the Theatre Manager on efficiencies and stock rotation across the peri-operative environment. Primary duties and areas of responsibility for PODs, Anaesthetics and Recovery Patient Assessment & Monitoring: Assess patient readiness for discharge, including evaluating vital signs, post-operative recovery, pain management, and any complications. Monitor patients for signs of complications (e.g. infection, bleeding, or adverse reactions to aesthesia). Review the patient's medical history, surgical procedure, and any special discharge requirements. Patient Education: Provide clear and comprehensive education to patients and families regarding post-operative care, wound care, medication management, signs of complications, and lifestyle modifications. Ensure patients understand their discharge instructions, including follow-up appointments, medication schedules, and activity restrictions. Distribute written educational materials as necessary. Discharge Documentation: Ensure accurate and timely completion of discharge documentation, including discharge summaries, patient instructions, and medication prescriptions. Ensure all necessary referrals (e.g. physical therapy, follow-up appointments) are arranged and documented. Verify the patient's understanding of discharge instructions and provide contact information for post-discharge questions or concerns. Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Teams: Work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff, and other healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care. Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and handoffs to ensure a smooth transition from the perioperative setting to post-discharge care. Pain and Medication Management: Ensure patients receive appropriate pain management strategies before discharge and that prescriptions for pain relief or other medications are provided as needed. Educate patients on proper medication use, potential side effects, and when to seek help if issues arise. Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement: Participate in the review of discharge procedures to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations. Track and report patient outcomes related to discharge, including readmission rates, patient satisfaction, and post-operative complications. Assist in developing protocols and guidelines for improving discharge processes and patient outcomes . Patient Advocacy: Advocate for patient needs and ensure that they are receiving the appropriate resources, referrals, and support. Address any concerns or questions from patients or families and provide emotional support as needed. Compliance and Safety: Ensure that discharge processes comply with TSS policies, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards. Maintain patient confidentiality. General Requirements for the Peri-Operative Environment: Act as a professional role model demonstrating clinical expertise in perioperative practice and assist in the setting and monitoring of professional standards. Provide skilled assistance and care to patients in the perioperative environment specifically encompassing PODs, anaesthetics and recovery. Assess the needs of the patience within the perioperative environment, to implement and evaluate patient care, rectifying and adjusting where required to meet individual needs. Demonstrates knowledge of current research, practices and procedures within the specialist field. Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing with the multidisciplinary team, patients and relatives. Works within professional codes of conduct. Ensure that patients perioperative needs are continually assessed and appropriate care delivered and documented. Supervise the work of junior staff ensuring quality and confidentiality is maintained. Manage own workload and support others to do this. Manage staffing resources to ensure the effective operation of the team for which they are responsible for. Ensure effective skill-mix and appropriate caseload management at all times. Ensure that all new staff are supported to achieve competencies during their preceptorship period and support teaching and development of all staff. Be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with NMC or HPC requirements. To participate in the training and development of Health Care Assistants and Operating Department Practitioners. Practical knowledge of the deteriorating patient in second stage recovery and being able to provide enhanced airway management.
