Crynodeb

As Head of US Sub-Federal in International Strategy and Trade Relations, you will lead the Department's approach to engagement with U.S. States on trade and investment in order to support UK economic growth. As part of this, you will need to use data and evidence to determine prioritisation and resource allocation across the US, advise on how HMG can intervene to grow trade and investment with individual States, and create comprehensive engagement strategies with key U.S. States to support UK growth.

You will also be responsible for leading the UK's approach to opening up and shaping markets at the state level, including securing recognition of UK professional qualifications with individual states and supporting UK firms to access the significant sub-federal government procurement market. This is an exciting and stretching role, advising how we can grow trade and investment with the UK's largest single country trade partner, with significant leadership responsibilities and opportunity for development.

You will lead the department's approach to delivering growth at a state level across the US. To do this, you will:

  • Use data and evidence to assess key growth opportunities across the US, to support overarching prioritisation and resourcing decisions.
  • Identify specific opportunities and challenges for UK firms seeking to trade and invest in the US at a state level to support strategy and policy development.
  • Develop comprehensive trade and investment strategies for priority areas working closely with the overseas network including His Majesty's Trade Commissioner and Consuls General.
  • Identify and seek to resolve state level market access barriers and to shape future markets, including supporting recognition of professional qualifications by U.S. States, positioning UK firms to benefit from significant U.S. sub-federal government procurement opportunities, and shaping markets aligned to the growth driving Industrial Strategy sectors.
  • Ensure good governance across DBT and XWH on UK engagement with U.S. States.
  • Support ministerial engagement including through inward and outward visits with state level stakeholders.
  • Lead a team of ten, setting an inspiring vision and creating an environment which fosters development and growth.
  • Ensure alignment with wider UK priorities by working closely with teams across the department, the senior leadership in the overseas network, with key government departments, regulators, chambers of commerce, devolved governments and US business representative organisations.
  • Play a strong corporate role in the leadership of International Strategy and Trade Relations Directorate.
