DfT and our agencies employ around 15,000 staff, of whom about 3800 are in the core Department, and we have the largest and most complex capital project portfolio in Government, delivered principally through delivery partners including Network Rail, HS2 Ltd and National Highways.

Deputy Director of Traffic and Technology is a varied and challenging role at the heart of reforming the way our roads work and addressing the issues that matter to everyday road users. This is a high profile role with a significant degree of Ministerial interest and a large multi-disciplinary team.
The successful candidate will:
Set the policy for how roads are used and regulated. This requires working with teams across the Road Transport Group, balancing competing demands for how road space should be used and priorities given for different modes.
Lead a significant programme to digitise the way roads operate. This includes developing the new Digital Traffic Regulation Order (DTRO) system – a key step in preparing the road network for autonomous vehicles, providing better in-vehicle data to drivers and making more flexible use of the road – as well as running the existing Street Manager service to manage Street Works and Blue Badge digital service.
Lead a significant legislative programme including elements of primary legislation in the Planning and Infrastructure Bills, as well as the potential for primary legislation on the long-standing issue of pavement parking. As well as a significant programme of secondary legislation to reform the way street works operate and lane rental schemes to tackle the perennial concern about utility works being disruptive and poorly coordinated.
Oversee a suite of statutory and non-statutory guidance setting out to local authorities how they should manage their roads ranging from guidance on bus lanes to street design.
