The Role

We’re recruiting for two Data Ethicists here at the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), to be part of our warm and collaborative Data Improvement Team within the Data Directorate.

We align our Data Ethics roles to the Government Digital and Data Framework, adapted to the appropriate role level.

We create a culture in which people are empowered with the data and information to make excellent decisions; using cutting edge tools, techniques and collaboration; putting evidence at the heart of the justice system. We launched our data strategy for MoJ and are working on improvements across data governance, architecture, literacy, ethics, culture, dissemination and linking.

You can read more about the Data Strategy in this blog post.

Data ethics is a cross-cutting discipline that assesses the wider societal impact of technology, producing recommendations for technologists and data professionals. It involves thinking about fairness, accountability, the law, moral dilemmas, and the risks involved in creating technology and data products and policies.

As a Data Ethicist in the Data Ethics Team, you will enable teams across the MoJ to understand data ethics and implement best practice in their work, helping with the

rollout and adoption of the newly developed MoJ AI & Data Science Ethics Framework in new business areas.

You’ll assist the Data Ethics Lead in providing a data ethics advisory service across the directorate and use your facilitation skills to create safe spaces for data teams to engage in ethical discussions, allowing team members to challenge and question their work in a constructive way.

You’ll get to work in an exciting and innovative area, working on cutting-edge guidance and forming part of a centre of excellence for data ethics.

Key Responsibilities:

Tools & products:
• Assist the Data Ethics Lead in the iteration and expansion of the current MoJ AI & Data Science Ethics Framework
• Evaluate the impact of the MoJ AI & Data Science Ethics Framework by developing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms

Advocacy & support:

• Be a point of contact for ethical enquiries and support across data teams
• Enable and empower others to implement data ethics best practice in their work (this could be through providing training, facilitating workshops or advising data science teams)
• Provide research and expertise on data ethics, and act as a champion and change agent
Community & engagement:
• Communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders across technical boundaries to explain and raise awareness of data ethics issues
• Identify opportunities to actively promote and champion the use of the MoJ AI & Data Science Ethics Framework (e.g. through events, written communications)
• Take ownership of the management and expansion of the MoJ Data Ethics Champions Network
• Build awareness of the Data Ethics Team and it’s service offering across the Directorate
If this feels like an exciting challenge, something you are enthusiastic about, and want to join our team please read on and apply!

Person Specification:

• Strong understanding of the ethical implications of data science approaches
• Good knowledge of social issues, the types of bias and discrimination different groups may face, and how to apply this understanding to data ethics work
• Understanding of data science techniques, including machine learning, natural language processing, and data visualisation
• Proven ability to communicate complex concepts to both technical and non- technical audiences
• Experience facilitating group discussions and workshops, encouraging participation, and managing group dynamics
• Experience leading a project
• Knowledge of project management tools and techniques, including monitoring, evaluation, and reporting
