This Fellowship post is designed to support a surgicalFY3-ST8 who wishes to make a commitment to education as part of their career. This is a twelve month out of programme post aimed at those who wish to build on their personal teaching experience, develop expertise in educational theory and practice, develop and deliver surgical training courses and undertake supervised educational research. Due to increasing pressure on surgical training from the introduction of the European Working Time Directive and the resulting shortened training times, increasing resident numbers and the impact of emergency/on-call commitments on training within the limitations of the EWTD, there is a need to consider alternative methods of training. Simulation in surgical training allows a safe environment to practice procedures and develop experience. There is a demand for high quality surgical simulation courses to augment the standard surgical training currently offered. To date we have through SaIL, introduced several technical and non-technical skills-based courses. The role of the Surgical Simulation Fellow will be to extend the current service, develop and deliver a variety of new training courses. Some of this training will be for in-house trainees at no cost to them while other courses will be required to generate revenue to support the service and contribute to its long-term viability. The role of the Surgical Simulation Fellow will be to extend the current service, develop and deliver a variety of new training courses. This role involves contributing to the development and delivery of surgical education, with a focus on both traditional and technology-enhanced learning methods. The candidate will help film and edit operative videos to upload onto an e-learning platform and embed them into E-modules, ensuring high-quality instructional content for trainees. They will support courses on surgical skills, alongside surgical drop-in sessions, providing hands-on training opportunities. The role includes general surgical clinical opportunities, offering exposure to various surgical procedures and techniques. the option for the post holder to have a clinical commitment for a maximum of 20% of their contracted time. It is important to keep these clinical commitments to a minimum to ensure that time in simulation is not diluted. The candidate can also be actively involved in research or audit projects, contributing to evidence-based improvements in surgical education and practice. Additionally, they will attend conferences to stay updated on the latest advancements in surgical training and clinical practice. The candidate will assist others in building their courses and facilitate surgical course ideas, including logistics and content development. This role has a strong simulation focus, requiring the individual to test and explore simulation innovations and technologies and integrate them into GSTT Simulation if appropriate. They will also participate in the local development of simulation innovation and technology, as well as creating simulation-based training models. Although an enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central to the post, as will a critical engagement with educational issues around providing postgraduate training in a changing context, both nationally and locally. This post is designed to allow for a surgical FY3 - ST8: Develop/ expand their skills in Human Patient simulation (HPS) and Medical Education Gain a qualification in Medical Education Publish research on their chosen area of interest in HPS/Medical Education The post holder will have an opportunity to commence a Medical Educational qualification via the Kings Learning Institute, Kings College London (KCL), to the level of Certificate in Medical Education/Clinical Pedagogy as part of their on-going studies towards a MA/MSc.Funding towards this is available with this fellowship programme, subject to agreement. There is an established research programme with KCL and the Simulation and Interactive Learning (SaIL) Centre and opportunities to contribute to this are available. The post holder will be expected to help deliver Simulation training across GSTT.
