The Role
We are looking for a dynamic and proactive Environmental and Safety (ES) Technician to support the ES Manager in ensuring the site meets all legislative and corporate safety and environmental standards. This role is essential to maintaining a safe and compliant work environment, driving ES improvements, and fostering a culture of responsibility across all levels.
This role is a 12 month Maternity Cover role and full time based in Samlesbury.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide technical support to the ES Manager, ensuring the site meets safety and environmental targets and legal requirements.
Lead ES performance improvement through communication, training, audits, and reviews.
Manage ES training and induction programs for all employees and contractors.
Ensure site compliance with safety, environmental legislation, waste management, and environmental permit requirements.
Support the implementation of crisis management and emergency systems, 5S management, and accident/incident investigations.
Promote and raise the profile of ES internally and with external stakeholders through initiatives and activities.
Deputise for the ES Manager when required, managing all ES duties in their absence.
Coach and support employee development in all aspects of ES.
Experience
Experience in health and safety within a unionized FMCG operation.
Strong understanding of environmental legislation, including IPPC and waste management regulations.
Experience in project management, with a track record of meeting challenging ES targets and KPIs.
Familiarity with safety and environmental principles, manufacturing systems, and process improvement.
Ability to build and maintain positive contractor relationships while ensuring compliance with ES policies.
Qualifications & Technical Competencies
Working towards or achieved Corporate Membership of IOSH (desirable), IIRSM, or an Environmental Professional Organisation (e.g., IEMA).
NEBOSH Certificate (Mandatory) /Diploma or equivalent NVQ qualification.
Knowledge of environmental and safety management processes, with the ability to organize and meet strict deadlines.
Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Ability to influence and challenge at all levels and lead by example.
Results-focused with exceptional attention to detail, and able to prioritize workload effectively.
