The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is part of the Department for Transport. Our purpose is to improve aviation safety by determining the circumstances and causes of air accidents and serious incidents and promoting action to prevent recurrence. We investigate accidents and serious incidents to civil aircraft in the UK (including UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies) and overseas where there is a UK interest.

As the AAIB’s competent person for Health and Safety, this role involves advising, leading and monitoring the AAIB’s Health and Safety responsibilities for the AAIB including teams deployed to accident sites as well as our activities carried out at AAIB HQ and during post deployment investigation. In addition, the role involves liaising with the other accident investigation branches, other government departments and international bodies on Health and Safety policy for accident investigation. The role also includes managing the AAIB’s engineering support to accident investigation including the AAIB’s hangars and engineering workshops, and two Engineering Support Technicians

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • You will head up Health and Safety as the competent person responsible for providing advice on Health and Safety policy to the Chief Inspector of Air Accidents and monitor its implementation through regular assessments.
  • This is an important role in maintaining the AAIB at the forefront in global air accident investigation. You will work closely with all members of AAIB staff to ensure they work safely in a variety of often challenging locations, particularly for deployments.
  • You will be responsible for liaising with the relevant authorities in the UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies concerning Health and Safety for air accident investigation and providing appropriate training.
  • You will work closely with the other accident investigation branches in the UK to share best practice in Health and Safety and supporting accident investigation.
