1. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST: Clinical 1. To undertake comprehensive assessments of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/ multi-pathologies. 2. To undertake assessment and treatment of patients requiring NIV, fully ventilated and other complex respiratory conditions. 3. To manage patient with respiratory failure (acute or chronic) 4. To use investigative and analytical skills to assess complex patients and support other more junior physiotherapy staff with their patients as required. 5. To devise individualised physiotherapy management and / or treatment plans, using clinical reasoning skills. Communication 1. To be able to communicate highly complex information sensitively to patients to gain their cooperation for treatment and valid consent. 2. To use persuading and influencing skills to encourage patients to self-manage their conditions. 3. To communicate any changes in care plan or treatment approach to other therapists as necessary. 4. To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patient to progress treatment programmes. This may include patients who will have difficulties in understanding or communicating, e.g. patients who maybe deaf, blind, or be unable to accept the diagnosis, or for whom English is not their first language. 5. To be able to manage frequently highly stressful, upsetting, or emotional situations in an empathetic manner. 6. To ensure timely and effective communication with the Therapy Lead on all professional matters. Analytical / Judgment skills 1. To use ongoing investigative and analytical skills, manual assessment techniques and diagnostic procedures to assess complex patients and formulate a clinical diagnosis. 2. To formulate accurate prognoses and recommend best course of intervention. 3. To evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes if required. 4. To keep up to date with developments, analysing current research and discussing and implementing changes to your clinical practice. 5. Responsibilities for human resources including personal and people development 1. To attend all relevant training to maintain competency and confidence. 2. To be responsible for and actively record your own personal development. This may include active participation in journal clubs, clinical reasoning and problem patient sessions as participant and facilitator. 3. To disseminate any training received to other staff and health care professionals. Health, safety, and security 1. To monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others. 2. Responsible for identifying and assessing potential risks involved in work activities and processes for self and others 3. To ensure completion of relevant risk assessments and associated documentation. 4. To take appropriate action, reporting actual or potential problems that may put health and safety and security at risk. 5. To be responsible for the safe use of equipment used in carrying out duties adhering to Trust and department policies and procedures. This includes competence and accuracy to use equipment by yourself and other healthcare professional, carers and patients. 6. To be aware of risks involved as part of delivering clinical care and manage this within own clinical caseload. 7. To demonstrate a high level of understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk, actively participating in clinical governance groups. Responsibility for Policy and Service Improvement/ Development 1. To make recommendations when appropriate to changes in practice leading to improvement in the service. 2. To be aware of risks involved as part of delivering clinical care and manage this within own patient caseload 3. To demonstrate physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessments and interventions including manual physiotherapy techniques. This involves frequent light to moderate physical effort. Education 1. To participate in the professional development and training of physiotherapists and other members of the team within the respiratory rotations and to contribute to the on-call training programme. 2. To work closely with other senior staff to ensure appropriate on call training in preparation for weekend and emergency on call working. 3. To undertake clinical reasoning and problem patient sessions as facilitator and participant to include on call training. 4. To participate in any training sessions as a recipient and facilitator. 5. To disseminate any training received to other staff and healthcare professionals. 6. To be actively involved in special interest groups to share and disseminate knowledge to colleagues. Research/Audit/Quality 1. To regularly participate in and lead on appropriate work-related research/evaluation projects and to be aware of current research relevant to the speciality. 2. To participate in and initiate clinical audit and the evaluation of clinical effectiveness in line with Trust Policies. 3. To evaluate your own clinical effectiveness. 4. To ensure relevant topics are included in annual clinical governance and service plan. 5. To undertake and present relevant evidence-based projects. IT To ensure electronic notes are accurate and adhere to HCPC and trust standards. To maintain timely and accurate statistical information as required by senior staff and managers. To be responsible for the accurate input of clinical information onto the trust IT system. To keep up to date with advances in technology
