About the Role

As a Communications Officer, you will play a key role in shaping and delivering engaging content across a variety of media channels, both internally and externally. You will help us connect with our audiences, raise awareness of our services, and champion the needs of people in Barnsley.

• Raising awareness of Age UK Barnsley’s work in the local community and with local organisations.
• Developing relationships with individual and corporate supporters
• Encouraging community support through volunteering and fundraising opportunities
with the objectives of increasing local support and donations.
• Producing high quality communications materials including hardcopy leaflets, newsletters and digital/social media.

The successful candidate will be highly organised and possess good interpersonal skills. A high level of practical skills, technical knowledge and ability to multi-task are also essential.

You will contribute to all of Age UK Barnsley’s social media accounts and our websites alongside our printed hard copy accounts.
This would suit someone with an interest in the emerging green economy and offers a great opportunity to help raise awareness of environmentally sustainable purchasing choices and its benefits for local communities.

You will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of stakeholders such as Age UK staff members and volunteers and externally with service users, delivery partners and service commissioners.

You will be the first point of contact for day-to-day marketing and communication activities and will also be able to gain frontline experience greeting visitors on our reception desk.

You will work as an Apprentice Marketing and Communications Assistant. You will be required to complete an 18-month training programme that will cover all aspects of the role and will be delivered through attendance at Barnsley College. You will complete the Multi-Channel Marketer Level 3 Apprenticeship. College attendance and successful completion of these studies is an essential requirement of this Apprenticeship and will be monitored and reviewed as part of the Apprentice role.

Working as an Apprentice Marketing and Communications Assistant at Age UK Barnsley your role will be varied and will help you get practical work experience to match all aspect of the qualification.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Source, create and edit content in collaboration with colleagues for appropriate marketing channels, such as website, email, social media, sales materials, affiliate marketing or event displays, ensuring that brand guidelines are met in order to achieve marketing objectives.
• Contribute to the development and execution of marketing plans - working with the senior staff team to identify communications and promotional opportunities and develop appropriate strategies; assisting with the design, production and copy-writing of all print material; and supporting staff to promote their services to clients and volunteers
• Undertake research to gather customer and stakeholder insights and maintain accurate customer data and relationships are managed in the pursuit of marketing goals.
• Use research data to inform marketing decisions, targeting, planning, delivery – e.g national Age UK data and campaigns
• Support and manage the storage and organisation of marketing materials
• Assist with the delivery of presentations/talks to local groups and support the organisation and promotion of activities and events, e.g. VIP visits and associated PR activity, press, advertising and partner marketing activity.
• Identify and use relevant/emerging trends, solutions and technologies to implement effective marketing activities.
• Monitor, optimise, analyse and evaluate marketing campaigns and channels in order to deliver on marketing objectives for the organisation and/or clients, measuring marketing delivery effectiveness.
• Contribute to the monitoring of marketing expenditure and activities to optimise impact.
• Production of newsletters for volunteers, staff and stakeholders.
• Reception duties and being first point of contact for our service.

Working week: 37.5 Hours per week including college day
9-5 Monday to Friday with occasional flexibility required to cover events.
