Salary: UofG Grade 4, £23,881 - £26,338 per annum

The University of Glasgow has been changing the world for more than 572 years. Today, we are one of the world's top 100 universities and ranked 13th in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) World Impact Rankings 2023, demonstrating that we are not only one of the best universities in the United Kingdom, but one of the best universities for the world. Our people have always been at the forefront of innovation, and our past achievements inspire our current world changers.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Electronics Technician to join the James Watt School of Engineering on a permanent basis.

About the role

You will be part of a team of around 8 Electronics technicians in the School of Engineering. We all have different Electronics related skills and specialities. Duties change depending on the time of year.

During term-time (October - March) our priority is student teaching related work. We are responsible for preparing and setting up timetabled teaching laboratory classes. We need to make sure that all required equipment is available, working correctly and consumables are provided. Planning for this in advance is essential. Normally we are not expected to teach the course material, but we need to have sufficient knowledge to assist and advise if equipment is providing unexpected results. Later in the teaching season (February - March) students will be working on projects, both individually and as part of teams. Our Electronics technical staff will be asked to manufacture Printed Circuit Boards and to provide advice and assistance for most aspects of their project work.

Sadly, we don't get the long holidays that the students enjoy!

During non-teaching time (April - September) we spend most of our time supporting research work around the School of Engineering. This can include 'design and build' work where we take the requirement and produce a finished product for a research programme. The Electronics team has a wide range of skills and regularly works with small signal analogue electronics, digital electronics, microcontroller systems, low power high voltage systems and larger systems using several kW of 3 phase power. We also design, prototype and build teaching laboratory equipment for new and changed courses in the coming year.
We will regularly be asked to provide advice about Electronic and Electrical questions and repair laboratory equipment from around the campus.

This is a rewarding and interesting early career technical post with inhouse and external training development opportunities in electrical and electronics engineering.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and offered on an open ended basis.
