Folkworks Summer Opportunities 2025 – Trainee Tutor

Role: Folkworks Summer Trainee Tutor

Location: The Glasshouse, Gateshead

Hours: 24 hours

Salary: £400 agreed fee

Reports to: Folkworks Summer School Musical Director & Folkworks Summer Sessions Musical Director




The Glasshouse ICM are recruiting two freelance trainee tutors for the 2025 Folkworks programmes:

1. Folkworks Summer School (9-18 years old)
2. Folkworks Summer Sessions (18+)




Both roles provide an excellent opportunity to observe and assist an experienced team of music educators while developing your own
skills in a supportive environment. The trainee tutors will be mentored by the musical director and will have opportunities for
reflection and learning throughout and after the course.




Role 1: Folkworks Youth and Junior Summer School Trainee Tutor

Location: Durham School
Dates: 5th – 8th August

* Arrival: Tuesday 5th August (afternoon)
* Working with young people: Wednesday 6th – Friday 8th August




Role 2: Folkworks Summer Sessions Trainee Tutor


Location: The Glasshouse, Gateshead
Dates: 15th – 18th July

* Arrival: Tuesday 15th July (afternoon)
* Working with adults: Wednesday 16th – Friday 18th July




Fee and Benefits (for both roles):

* £400 (3 teaching days + 1 day of planning/evaluation)
* Travel expenses covered (with receipts/mileage rate)
* Accommodation and meals provided from Tuesday evening to Friday lunchtime




Key Responsibilities (for both roles):

* Support tutors during workshops, which may include mixed-instrument sessions, instrument-specific sectionals, song, and dance.
* Assist in teaching repertoire planned by the musical director and tutor team.
* Support participants (young people or adults) in their learning and preparation for a sharing event at the end of the course.
* Ensure the safety and wellbeing of participants during workshops, adhering to health and safety protocols.
* Attend safeguarding training and planning meetings prior to the course.
* Complete daily and summary reports during the course and participate in post-course debriefs.
* Adhere to The Glasshouse’s child protection, safeguarding, and risk assessment policies.
* Communicate any concerns about participants to the relevant pastoral lead and report any disclosures according to safeguarding
policies.




Person Specification (for both roles):

* Highly interested and enthusiastic about folk music education.
* Experienced in folk music playing, singing, or dancing.
* Dedicated to high-quality music education practices.
* Keen to learn more about music education.
* Experienced and interested in working with young people (for the Summer School) or adults (for the Summer Sessions).
* Over 18 years old.




Additional Information:

* A DBS certificate is required for both roles. The Glasshouse can assist in obtaining this if necessary.
* Evening musical activities are optional but provide additional engagement opportunities.
