Crynodeb

We are seeking a Plant Nursery Team Leader to join our client near Woodbridge in Suffolk. This full- time, permanent, employed role comes with role progression for the right candidate.

This exciting role would suit somebody with excellent plant knowledge, preferably backed up with experience in a nursery-based role, ideally leading a team. If you have no leadership experience, you’ll need the right personal attributes to grow into an organised, confident, positive leader of a small team.

This is an outdoors job, working in the beautiful Suffolk countryside. Due to the rural location of the nursery, you will need to have your own vehicle to commute to work daily, if successful.

The Company

Our client is a well-established business, boasting one of the largest ranges of hardy nursery stock in the country as well as having an extensive botanic collection. They are specialist growers of a large range of rare and unusual plants and are located on a 30 acre plus site with a workforce of around 15. Our client is committed to growing genuine English grown and English provenance native trees and hedging and have a fantastic reputation within their industry.

The Job

This role has arisen due to internal promotion and itself comes with progression for the right candidate. Beginning in the Nursery Team Leader position, you’ll relish the challenge of getting to grips with the workload, understanding the plant collection, team and business model before stepping up and progressing within the business.

The nursery’s range starts from propagation, through to specimen plants in up to 1,000 litre containers. Their 30+ acre site also contains an arboretum and is home to over 6,000 different plant specimens.

You’ll be responsible for organising, motivating, and leading a small team of six within the growing department. The scope of the role will include:

With the support of both the Operations Manager & Managing Director, assist in fulfilling the nursery growing & production plans
Leading and organising the growing team whilst they carry out their range of duties growing quality plants.
Ensure records are maintained and our database is updated
Participate in regular stock control processes
Be hands on where required and coach & mentor your team to produce quality plants.
Responsibilities will initially be set and agreed but we would like a relationship where you can contribute your own ideas and be happy to work on your own initiative
Demonstrate an enthusiasm for a wide range of plants and trees. You will also need to be willing to increase that knowledge, including being comfortable learning Botanic plant names.

Requirements

Excellent, hands-on horticulture experience, ideally gained within a production nursery setting
A natural leaning towards being a leader, with the ability to organise your own workload as well as others to fulfil production requirements
Ideally, you will possess a basic horticultural qualification such as spray certificate PA1 & PA6
A broad interest in plants and trees, and a good basic understanding of Latin plant names and a willingness to expand this knowledge in-post
An organised but flexible and adaptable approach. Working as part of a small, busy team in horticulture means adapting to weather conditions, business needs and staffing issues
An open communication style, with the confidence to ask questions, make suggestions and build positive relationships with your team and colleagues
The ability to work in all weather conditions, in what is a physically demanding role

Hours & Pay

This role is a full-time position, working five days a week Monday to Friday. During the Winter months you’ll work from 7:30 – 16:00, whilst the rest of the year you’ll work from 7:30 – 17:00.

From April-October, you will be required to carry out weekend watering duties on a rota with the rest of the team. This will be paid as overtime.

The successful candidate will be paid a competitive annual salary, somewhat negotiable depending on skills and experience.

In Return

This is a wonderful opportunity for somebody looking to advance their career in a well-respected, interesting nursery in the beautiful Suffolk countryside. You’ll have the chance to work for a friendly, supportive business surrounded by passionate plant people where you will extend your own plant knowledge.
