Crynodeb

DHSC leads the health and care system in England, helping people to live better lives for longer. We have one of the most absorbing, challenging and critical set of tasks and objectives in Government. Our goals are long-term, highly inter-dependent and complex, and affect everyone throughout England. This brings significant delivery challenges, many of which are not matched in other departments.

You may not have a background in health and social care, but what you will have is a proven track record of successful and strategic delivery in high profile arenas and will have demonstrated your ability to cut through complexity. You will be able to build strong relationships and successful coalitions and will also be a natural team leader, with a proven ability to inspire and lead a small team to deliver great results day after day.

As Deputy Director of the Secretary of State’s Delivery Unit, you will work closely with the Director of the Secretary of State’s Delivery Unit, Ministers and colleagues across the health and care system, and the Directors’ General to effect change and deliver results.

As Deputy Director of the Secretary of State’s Delivery Unit, you will work closely with the Director of the Secretary of State’s Delivery Unit, and co-located with the Secretary of State’s private office. You will have a track record of frontline delivery experience, of working dynamically and effectively with multiple delivery partners and with a strong interest in driving public service reform. You will be a visible and inclusive leader, actively fostering an open and collaborative culture that empowers the team to deliver their best work.

Key Responsibilities

As Director of the Secretary of State’s Delivery Unit you will lead a small multidisciplinary team responsible for:

  • Tracking and challenging delivery of the Secretary of State’s priorities, including progress against manifesto commitments via regular reporting to the Secretary of State and Permanent Secretary.
  • Investigating and intervening proactively to solve delivery challenges, enabling Ministers to understand progress on priorities, issues and risks affecting delivery and how to address them.
  • Bringing together the Department and its Arm’s Length Bodies (particularly NHS England) together to ensure joined up working on the Secretary of State’s priorities.
  • Building departmental capability to help deliver the health mission and the 10-year plan for health.
  • Working closely with Number 10, the Cabinet Office, HMT and health and care colleagues to deliver a shared approach to solutions.
  • Overseeing external reporting to the centre on top DHSC priorities.
  • Preparing the Department for PM stocktakes.
