A rare opportunity has arisen within our National recognised Trauma & Orthopaedic department. Applicants are invited to apply for the full time LED ST3+ Speciality Doctor post in Trauma and Orthopaedics, this post is to work alongside the existing Consultant body and rotational Trainee SpR Orthopaedic team based across two sites at Hastings and Eastbourne. The successful candidates will follow a weekly schedule of elective outpatient and fracture clinics, trauma and elective operating as well as providing ward support to the junior doctor team.

The successful candidates will follow a weekly schedule of elective outpatient and fracture clinics, trauma and elective operating as well as providing ward support to the resident doctor team.
The appointee’s timetable will specifically follow their Consultants timetable with additional service provisions, the successful candidate will also be part of the on-call rota which will cover non-resident night on-call as well as weekend cover, this on-call is formed as part of a 1:12 rota.
The post holder, with support, will continue to develop the role of Orthopaedic surgery in the Trust and ICS wide so it is essentialthat the successful applicant has an established and in-depth knowledge of Orthopaedics.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Surgical care of Orthopaedic patients on our Trauma wards and Elective wards, Outpatients, Theatres and Emergency departments.
Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Orthopaedic patients on the trauma unit, elective unit and other clinical areas, as required.
Pre-op, perioperative and post-operative care of Trauma & Orthopaedic patients
To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Trauma & Orthopaedic patients within our unit, in line with national and local clinical guidelines.
Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and Allied Health Professionals
To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
To attend meetings as appropriate.
Fulfil duties of weekly timetables, including out of hours or weeks with prior agreement.
To actively participate in both departmental and Trusts matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
The post holder we be expected to record their findings and general investigate, optimising their patients prior to their orthopaedic surgery or other treatment and maintain the patients’ surgical care during their hospital episodes.
The post holder will be required to attend the 8am daily Trauma meeting when on duty and may be required to present patients as needed.

The post offers excellent experience in all aspect of Trauma & Orthopaedic care.
The successful applicant also accepts that they will perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation where practicable, with colleagues both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the professions and the Department that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and in particular that junior doctors should not be required to work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis. Additional overtime payment is made under these circumstances.
As a teaching hospital we support the Trainees for the South East Thames rotation, incorporating the ‘firm’ approach to services, with Specialist Registrars working specifically with one or two consultants, but all medical personnel support the service when the patient flow demands. We are fortunate to receive Core Trainees, Foundation year I and II trainees and have established junior medical trust doctors. The Trauma & Orthopaedic department have self-contained specific outpatient services, with highly trained Orthopaedic Practitioners in purpose build casting departments. There is a team of Orthopaedic Care Practitioners who support the Consultant body and are involved in service provision. Inpatient trauma services are centralised to the Conquest site with Elective inpatient beds/wards on both acute sites. The post holder, with support, will continue to develop the role of Orthogeriatric medicine in the Trust and STP wide.
