This placement provides the opportunity to spend a full year immersed in a particular garden department, studying a specific group of plants, garden practice or style. You will gain knowledge, experience, skills and training in your specialism, in a work-based context, to prepare you for professional life in the industry.

Gardening with the Welcome and Riverside team will challenge you to think outside of the box and garden in a circular, sustainable way, preparing you for your next step in the industry. As part of the Welcome and Riverside team you will assist the team in gardening in the following areas:

•The front of house landscape, a combination of native plants merging into a more gardened landscape, featuring an exciting ‘eclectic’ border around the base of the Laboratory, fine lawn terraces, large topiary, formal clipped Yew hedges and seasonal displays;
•The Pinetum, which holds a vast collection of pines and conifers with added autumnal canopy interest and meadows below;
•The national heather collection, a redeveloped area to the garden containing over 900 cultivars of heathers creatively planted alongside coastal, drought tolerant thriving plants;
•The ornamental grass garden and Stone Pine café featuring autumnal seed head interest and pollinator friendly plants that are suited to dry sandy Mediterranean conditions;
•The bird hide and Riverside Walk containing wildlife friendly berries and natural food interest for birds and mammals.

Gardening tasks will consist of planting out, cutting back of various plants and general day to day maintenance in a naturalistic and circular style.

During the placement you will complete horticultural research culminating in a project write up and submission for the RHS Level 3 Award in Horticultural Investigation (funded by the RHS). In order to achieve the qualification, you will also be required to attend several online sessions (either live or recordings) over a period of 9 months and complete a professional discussion.

Safeguarding and Inclusion:
The RHS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk and expects all personnel to share in this commitment. We are an inclusive employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
