The New Media Unit

The New Media Unit (NMU) is part of the Government Communication Service (GCS) and sits within the Cabinet Office. The NMU was established in November 2024 with the clear goal to reach, connect and rebuild trust with audiences in the most effective way possible.

Our aim is to provide the public with relevant, useful and authentic content when and where they want to receive it and communicate in an entirely new way.

This is a really exciting time to be joining the NMU as we look to expand our activity, test and learn different approaches and deliver communications which make a difference to people’s lives. This is a rare chance to be part of something truly groundbreaking, where your ideas will directly influence the future of digital communications at the heart of government.

The Team

Digital Creative and Production - the team covers creative direction and creation across all areas including graphic design, video, photography and in-app content creation. Production covers shoot planning and production, copywriting, publishing and working directly with creators / real life storytellers to produce content that performs natively in your daily social media feeds.

The Role

The new government has signalled a clear intention to focus on ambitious, measurable, long-term objectives that deliver better outcomes for citizens. This requires a new way of doing government which is more joined-up and better reaches the public to build awareness, understanding and trust in the government’s missions.

The New Media Unit is a critical lever in achieving these long-term aims, bringing together the specialist skills required to reach citizens with the content they want to consume at a time and place they want to consume it with the clear objective of driving trust, confidence and the behaviour change needed to reach the government’s long-term goals.

This is a pivotal role for an experienced Senior Videographer to lead video production within the New Media Unit. As part of an in-house creative team, the successful candidate will oversee the development, production, and editing of high-quality video content that meets the government's communication goals. This role demands creativity, technical expertise, and a strong understanding of digital trends to produce compelling content that supports government campaigns and engages a wide audience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Video Production for Campaigns: Create and oversee video content specifically for major government campaigns and evergreen organic content. Develop and produce visually engaging and innovative videos in partnership with producers that communicate key messages clearly and effectively to the public.
  • Collaborate with Influencers and Digital Creators: Work closely with influencers, stakeholders, digital creators, and external partners to create and edit assets ensuring that content is engaging, authentic, and reaches target audiences across digital platforms.
  • Maintain and Set Industry Standards: Establish and uphold best practices for video production, ensuring all content meets high standards of quality, style, and effectiveness. Guide the team in adhering to and evolving these standards in response to industry and platform trends.
  • Provide Strategic Content Advice: Act as an advisor within the Civil Service for video content, advising on tone, style, and approach for content and campaigns to ensure brand consistency and alignment with broader communication goals.
  • Content Planning and Storyboarding: Lead content planning and storyboarding sessions in partnership with producers, aligning video projects with campaign strategies and objectives. Translate campaign messages into engaging and accessible video formats.
  • Research and Innovate: Stay at the forefront of social video trends, tools, and techniques, bringing fresh ideas to government communications. Regularly test new formats, styles, and content types to keep government content relevant and engaging.
  • Team Development and Mentorship: Mentor and guide team members in technical skills, creative direction, and project management. Encourage a collaborative, supportive environment that fosters talent development and enables team members to thrive.
  • Performance Analysis: Track and evaluate video content performance against objectives and KPIs. Use analytics insights to optimise content strategies and continuously improve video effectiveness.
