Summary

Health and social care issues affect us all and the work of the Department of Health and Social Care has never been as important as today. It is working hard to fix the NHS and deliver a healthcare system fit for the future. If you want to be part of the team playing an essential role in delivering our new health mission, we want to hear from you.

The DHSC Communications directorate leads the conversation about health and care by engaging people through innovative campaigns and activity as we support improvements to the health of the nation and how the NHS delivers care.

The directorate has three new multi-disciplinary integrated teams which are responsible for driving the communications for the government’s health ambitions and priorities. These teams are the driving force on developing multi-channel strategies for the key health topics to ensure our audiences and insight is at the heart of activity, shaping the narrative and message on departmental priorities.

The department is looking for an accomplished campaigns professional to lead these three teams and this is an exciting opportunity for someone with the full range of modern communications skills – the ability to use insight and evaluation to drive campaigns, experience of fully integrating digital into proactive and reactive work and an understanding of the current media landscape.

You will lead the design and delivery of innovative and effective multi-disciplinary multi-channels strategic low cost/no cost campaigns to communicate key priorities and will work closely with special advisers, ministerial private offices and No.10, deploying the full range of communication tools to support the government’s policy agenda around departmental priorities.

You will develop and maintain successful ways of working, ensuring cross-directorate/departmental collaboration with senior policy officials, private offices and core communications teams, ensuring all strategies are fully evaluated.

The successful candidate will also build and develop strong working relations with communication leaders within NHS England and other DHSC Arm's Lengths Bodies to ensure a collaborative approach to all activity.

You will also work as part of the Senior Management Team to develop the shape, function and capability of the division, working closely with senior leaders to help the working culture and build networks across the department and Whitehall.

We can offer you a competitive package, an excellent range of training and development opportunities, a friendly and supportive team and the chance to play a key role in communicating some of the most important issues in society today. A background in the health/social care sector is not an essential requirement for this role, but you will be required to demonstrate a proven track record of successful communications.

As Head of Priority Campaigns your main responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the design and delivery of innovative and effective non-paid campaigns to communicate key priorities. You will work closely with ministers, Special Advisors and No.10, deploying the full range of communication tools to support the government’s policy agenda around departmental priorities.
  • Advise and provide media handling advice to Secretary of State and ministers.
  • Developing and maintain successful ways of working, ensuring cross-directorate/departmental collaboration with senior policy officials, private offices, and core communications teams, ensuring all strategies are fully evaluated and regularly assessed.
  • Building and developing strong working relations with communication leaders within NHS England and other DHSC Arm's Lengths Bodies to ensure a collaborative approach to all activity.
  • Working as part of the Senior Management Team to develop the shape, function and capability of the division, collaborating closely with senior leaders to help the working culture and build networks across the department and Whitehall.

We expect all our senior leaders to be:

  • Inspiring – about our work and its future
  • Confident – in our engagement with others
  • Empowering – to allow our teams to deliver.
