All Trusts in England must employ a Guardian of Safe Working (GoSW). The GoSW is an independent role and responsible for protecting the safeguards for resident doctors as outlined in the Terms and Conditions of Service (2016) and must provide assurance to the Trust Board that doctors remain safe to carry out their clinical duties
Act as the champion of safe working hours for doctors in approved training programmes and locally employed doctors to ensure that action is taken to ensure that the working hours within the Trust are safe
Provide assurance to the Trust Board or equivalent body that trainee doctors are safely rostered and are working hours that are safe and in compliance with the TCS (2016)
Actively promote safe working practices and ensuring good practices are shared within the organisation
Advise and support clinical teams with highlighted areas of difficulties
Chair the Resident Doctor Forum (RDF) where safety issues and the improvement to resident doctors’ working can be discussed/addressed
Attend the Joint Local Negotiating Consulting Committee (JLNCC)
Attend the resident doctors’ induction to raise awareness of the role and the relevance of exception reports
Attend relevant forums i.e. Clinical Group Education Boards regarding exception reports
Represent the Trust at regional and national Guardian of Safe Working events
