We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Learning Disability Citywide Community Team within Birmingham Community Health Care NHS Foundation Trust, the largest community trust in the country.
You will be implementing a range of interventions specified by the Speech and Language Therapists and deliver training to individuals/families/carers and other professionals and regularly support colleagues. You will Liaise with carers and other agencies in agreement with the Speech and Language Therapists to gather and collate the necessary information and support the therapists in organising the location, hospitality, and materials related to clinical and training duties.

Mainduties
Clinicalresponsibilities
· Dealswithclientswithlearningdisabilitiesandcarerswhomayhavecomplex needs and/or be under extreme stress.
· Using own initiative, carries out clinical work with people who have learning disabilities who have communication and eating and drinking difficulties under the supervision of the SLT (Speech and Language Therapist) on occasions by telephone. Observes clients with eating and drinking problems. Completes a screeningchecklistandinformsthequalifiedSLToftheoutcome.Thiswillonly be following training and assessment of competencies.
· Undertakes patient assessments as advised by qualified staff.
· Implementsarangeoftreatmentswithclientsindependently.
· Contributes to evaluation and modification of communication environments, advisingcarers, residentialhomes,daycentres etc.oncommunication timetables, communication passports and signing.
· Writesclinicalrecordsandlettersindependentlyandreportswithsupport.
· Negotiateswithprofessional,clientsandcarersinordertodeliverroutineclinicalwork.
· Useskeyboardskillsandcomputerknowledgetoproducecustomised assessments, therapy resources and training materials.
· Takesinitiativeforadmin/clericaltaskstoamaximumof30%oftheworking week eg. Answering the telephone, collecting/distributing post, replenishing supplies of standard documentation.
· Managesinfectionrisksonequipment.
· Workswithclientswhosebehaviourmaychallengesoastocauseharmtoself and others.
· Workswithclientswhomaybeatriskofpotential/actualabuse.
· Runsgroups,bothformalandinformal,aswellasindividualtreatmentprogrammes.
· Carriesoutprescribedeatinganddrinkingprogrammeswrittenbyaqualified SLT and can modify these within set parameters.
· Managesinfectioncontrolrisksincludingthosefrombodilyfluids.
· Carriesoutinvasiveproceduressuchasintensiveinteraction andsensoryinteraction.
· Uses highly developed communication skills to explain information from assessment/therapyplanstoclients,carersandmultidisciplinaryteammembers.
Serviceevaluation/development
· Contributestolocalauditofownwork.
· Contributestothedevelopmentofpoliciesbyproposingchangesatlocaland team level.
· Contributestoservicewideimprovementprojects.
Training/support
· AssistsSLTstoidentifytrainingneedsinrelationtoLDcaseload.
· Organiseslocation,hospitalityandmaterialsasagreedwiththeSLT.
· Deliverstraininge.g.Makaton,communicationpassport,objectsofreference,to other members of the MDT, carers/parents etc.
· Supportsapprentices,workexperiencehelpersandstudents –actsasamentor and identifies training needs.
· Assistsintheinductionofnewlyqualifiedtherapistsandprovidesobservational experience for SLT students.
· LiaiseswithSLTonaregularbasisandidentifieswhen delegated treatment plans need revising.
· Participatesinnon-managerialclinicalsupervision.
· ParticipatesinandreceivespeersupportfromotherSLTAs,assistantand practitioners from other professional groups.
· Takes responsibility for fulfilling own professional training and development needsinconsultationwithlinemanagere.g.participationinclinicalexcellencenetworks.
Professionalresponsibility
· AbidesbytheprofessionalstandardsoftheRoyal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
ResearchActivities
· Contributestoclinicalandmanagerial auditsandundertakesauditsofownand others’ work under direction.
· ParticipatesinresearchwithintheSLTteamandacrosstheLDservices.
ServiceManagement
· MonitorsstockfortheSLTstaffacrossallSLTbasescitywide.
· MaintainsupkeepoftheSLTequipmentandcompletesequipmentinventories.
· ProducestherapyresourcesunderthedirectionofanSLTe.g.communication timetables/passports/keyrings, formal training packs and activity books.
· Providesstatisticalinformationonowndailypracticeforservicemanagementpurposes.
· Providesaservicewhichisculturally,linguistically,genderanddisability sensitive to meet the needs of the population of Birmingham.
· Toundertakeotherdutiescommensuratewiththisgradeofpostinagreement with the relevant line manager.
