If this is you then an exciting opportunity has arisen to join the maternity services leadership team at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Trust as the Deputy Chief Midwife. This role will involve having the overall operational responsibility for midwifery services working within the Directorate Management team. Accountable to both the Chief Midwife and Clinical Director for Women’s Services, you will provide operational and strategic
leadership to maternity services across Evelina London. You will work closely with the Maternity Service Lead and operational leads to ensure that we continue to deliver outstanding maternity services, which is an ambitious service and continuously improving.


We are looking for a highly motivated, innovative, forward thinking midwife with an extensive experience in maternity to provide effective, visible clinical and professional leadership for the midwifery department. You will have an excellent record in midwifery leadership, and will be able to demonstrate a commitment to help delivery of strategic ambitions, and develop the staff you lead.


Evelina London is part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and we are responsible for providing services for women and children. With over 3,000 dedicated staff, and led by an Executive Team and Board, we have significant devolved autonomy to focus operationally and strategically upon the needs of our patients. We also benefit from being part of a large and successful NHS foundation trust, whose values we share. We have an ambitious strategic development programme, with backing from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust Executive Board.


As the only NHS Trust in London with women’s and specialist children’s services on one site we have unique opportunities to provide excellent, high-quality, integrated care for mothers, babies and children.
Our directorate provides high quality care to patients across South East London, as well as delivering a range of specialist services both nationally and internationally. We treat approximately 40,000 gynaecology patients, care for 6,400 women giving birth, which includes around 300 private births a year. We have one of the largest specialist neonatal intensive care units in England as well as one of the largest NHS IVF units in the UK, which includes our flagship Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis services. Alongside our clinical services, we are integrated with colleagues at Kings College London, delivering a significant programme of research and development.

The Deputy Chief Midwife’s pivotal duty is to provide day to day operational and professional leadership and role modelling to the professional group within the organisation. The post holder will be accountable for the delivery of high quality, cost effective midwifery care within a set budget, and is responsible for meeting key performance indicators and regulatory standards linked to maternity services. Line managing and overseeing senior midwifery teams, the Deputy Chief Midwife will be highly visible to our midwifery workforce, delivering regular clinical sessions in both acute and community sessions.



The postholder will support the Chief Midwife with all aspects of the professional portfolio, including the trusts involvement in the South East London Local Maternity and Neonatal System, pan-London and national maternity programmes, and representing the Midwifery profession at an organisational level. Deputy Chief Midwife will also be expected to forge a strong working relationship with the Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership.



The Deputy Chief Midwife is jointly responsible with the General Manager and Head of Obstetrics for the operational delivery of the legal and governance agenda in maternity services, including the delivery of schemes in line with NHS Resolutions (NHSR), and the introduction of specific safety and quality schemes.

1. To be accountable for the direct delivery of high quality midwifery care and support the Clinical Director and Chief Midwife in delivering on all other aspects of clinical care.
2. To be responsible for ensuring all key quality principles are embedded in clinical practice.
3. To lead the delivery of midwifery practice that is safe and effective and up-to-date.
4. Ensure the safety and well-being of patients, service users and colleagues by monitoring patient quality and safety, taking any necessary corrective action as appropriate to prevent any deterioration in service standards, or to the safety and welfare of patients and staff.
5. Participate in the regional Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) and Clinical Networks.
6. Ensure that staff wellbeing is supported and monitored, and is central to the culture of midwifery teams
7. Ensure all midwives, and other professional staff groups are able to achieve their ongoing professional development, ensuring all staff have personal development plans and benefit from appropriate continuing educational opportunities
8. Support the specialty management teams within the Directorate to understand financial resource management and to manage their delegated budgets, staff and resources effectively, providing guidance, leadership and supervision as required.
9. Provide leadership and oversight of the maternity 'Good to Outstanding ' programme to drive improvement and monitor effectiveness.
