Summary

To perform Venepuncture and veneole (capillary sampling) blood collection procedures (the piercing/puncturing of veins or the slicing of veneoles which are both invasive, clinical procedures. To extract blood samples from patients/ in a manner that makes the blood sample suitable for analytical, therapeutic or diagnostic testing and purpose. To co-ordinate activities in varied locations e.g. hospital wards, outpatient clinics, community locations. Working with management to maintain and update policies and procedures that will lead to service improvements. To investigate all untoward incidents including patient complaints and make recommendations to reduce the incidence of re-occurrence. To be responsible for the health, safety and welfare of yourself and of the patient. To ensure Health and Safety procedures are followed by all staff in all areas. To ensure that staff are fully conversant with obtaining lawful consent and that consent is obtained in all instances. To effectively manage contingencies that arises during the day to day running of phlebotomy services. To represent the service at meetings and promote good working relationships across internal and external boundaries being the first point of contact for Phlebotomy. To collect /collate evidence of work-based practice fit- for periodic review. To collect data/information for internal/external audit purposes. To independently manage own workload and effectively delegate work to others. To communicate effectively, information to patients, relatives and staff of all ages, genders, sexual orientation, cultures or physical abilities, in a non-discriminatory or judgmental manner and be able to overcome barriers of communication within these areas. To ensure the provision of equipment fit for use and in a manner that makes it fit for disposal by you or others. To identify, select and utilise a suitable site fit for the purpose of blood collection using personal judgmental skills. To obtain blood samples from patients to a standard fit for laboratory testing ensuring minimum distress or discomfort is caused to the patient during the blood collection process To act as an expert in this field of practice. To create an environment suitable for the needs of both patients and staff To promote a critical and analytical approach to the delivery of service and implement, changes to improve systems when required. To respond to and/or investigate complaints ensuring appropriate escalation action is taken to prevent re-occurrence. Through appraisal identify peoples strengths and weaknesses providing constructive feedback and support to maximise their contribution to the team and to their personal development. The job holder will be expected to work across all Trust sites, including non-Trust premises, as and when required to do so. This list is not exhaustive and the changing needs of the service from time to time may require the development of other appropriate tasks and skills. These will be fully discussed with the post holder in advance of their implementation. The Phlebotomy service of UHN NHS Foundation Trust is located on several sites; the post holder may be required to work in an area at an alternative site as required by the Phlebotomy Manager. In addition, the Trust requires compliance with a number of corporate policies and procedures. These policies will be discussed with your line manager during your period of induction and further information is available from the Trusts intranet.
