Department Facilities The Obstetrics & Gynaecology Directorate is based at Whiston Hospital at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching hospitals NHS Trust with some outpatient services and Day surgery at St Helens hospital (all outpatient hysteroscopy/PMB & colposcopy clinics and urodynamics clinics are at St Helens hospital in the DTC). The directorate currently delivers over 4000 babies per annum. All services are provided in the directorate and are all consultants led including satellite clinics at Runcorn, Widnes, Newton and Haydock. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has 15 cots, is level 2 and is housed adjacent to the Delivery suite, and currently undertakes care of neonates from 27 weeks gestation. The Directorate is committed to expanding the role of the midwife. There is an excellent level of co-operation between the Doctors (at all levels), Midwives and Nurses in the unit that ensures that the quality of care delivered is optimal at all times. There are designated Core Midwives in charge of labour ward suite. These Midwives are experienced Practitioners with expanding roles / tasks such as reading, interpreting complex CTGs and are involved in the Drills and Skills mandatory training courses (PROMPT) for all medical and midwifery staff. All midwives are expected to repair uncomplicated episiotomies on women they have delivered to encourage continuity. The directorate has successfully trained a number of midwife sonographers who complements ultrasound services offered to women. The directorate has an active Quality and Safety team. There is a dedicated Quality and Safety Matron and a Risk Management midwife. The directorate has achieved NHSLA (CNST) level 3 accreditation. The directorate has an obstetric day unit - fetomaternal assessment unit (run by midwives) that provides computerised CTG assessment, blood pressure profiles, scanning facilities and blood assessments. The unit is led by the fetomaternal consultant Mrs Pankaja who scans high risk pregnancies and carries out amniocentesis. There are 1.5 weekly scanning sessions in which Mrs Pankaja provides dedicated Fetal Medicine scanning expertise. Gynaecology General gynaecology is provided by all 20 consultants. All aspects of gynaecology services are provided including minimal access surgery. The Urodynamic Service is led by Mr J Thomas. There are 4 Urodynamic sessions per week, 2 of which are dedicated Consultant sessions. The Colposcopy Service is currently led by Mr T Kundodyiwa who is also lead for Oncology. There are dedicated consultant Colposcopy sessions currently run by Mr Kundodyiwa, Mrs Roberts supervises the other sessions run by Nurse Colposcopists, and SAS doctors. The unit has an annual throughput of approximately 2,000 cases. Facilities for Loop Excision (LLETZ) and Cold Coagulation exist. Closed circuit television is available for supervision and teaching of Colposcopy. There is an Early pregnancy assessment unit (EPAU) or Buchanan Suite led by Mrs S Rao; the BEP clinic is run daily (morning) by Mrs Rao with dedicated nurses, including a Saturday morning session. There is a dedicated ultrasound scan in the unit with facilities for transvaginal scanning. Time is allocated for SpR and medical student training in the unit. The outpatient hysteroscopy service is currently led by Miss Cording. There are multiple dedicated outpatient hysteroscopy sessions a week for PMB and Non-PMB, many of which are dedicated Consultant sessions and some sessions run by SAS doctors and Nurse specialists. Two dedicated Minor Procedures Clinics are held each week and run by SpRs for such things as ring pessaries, insertion / removal of coils and wound assessments; in addition to Nurse- led Minor procedures clinics. All in-patient work is on the Whiston site in a dedicated ward (3E). Job Plan Example The post will involve work in Gynaecology outpatient clinics, antenatal clinics, delivery suite, obstetrics and gynaecology theatres. Special interest sessions will be encouraged and provided as far as possible depending on skills and completed ATSMs or equivalent. On callswill be included in working schedules. There will be opportunities to embark on new ATSMs as appropriate. It would be expected that any successful candidate would take an active role in the service provision of the department. In addition, they would be expected to have active participation in education and audit. Teaching & Training Responsibilities The post will include a requirement to be involved in the teaching of junior staff, including those preparing for examinations such as MRCOG and DRCOG as well as teaching medical students from Liverpool University. There are also obstetric emergency study days and perineal workshops. The trust is committed to continuing medical education and professional development. Successful candidates will be expected and encouraged to maintain and develop their skills and all appropriate study leave will be supported by the trust. Research & Audit Responsibilities Involvement in audit will be expected and encouraged. The trust have a well-established audit unit to support this.
