Locum CLINICAL FELLOW IN PAEDIATRIC HAEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY



Applications are invited to apply for the post of Locum Clinical Fellow in the Department of Paediatric Oncology and Haematology based at the Children’s Hospital Oxford, John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford.



The post is for 40 hours/week, with no on-call commitments. The appointment is initially for 12 months Maternity Cover, with possible scope to extend the duration of contract.



The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country and enjoys a national reputation for the quality of its services in healthcare. The Trust is comprised of four hospitals; the John Radcliffe Hospital (including the Children’s Hospital), Churchill Hospital, and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre are all situated in Headington, Oxford. The Horton General Hospital is in Banbury.



The successful applicant will join a team lead by 6 substantive Consultants: 3 Paediatric Haematologists and 3 Paediatric Oncologists.



T The post holder’s duties will be primarily at the Children’s Hospital Oxford (CHOX), located in the John Radcliffe (JR) Hospital but it is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations and outreach clinics.The post is also suited to someone with haematology experience (adult or paediatric) to develop their skills in paediatric haematology and oncology.









The Oxford Paediatric and Adolescent Haematology/Oncology unit provides a holistic service for patients within the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance, consisting of Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Swindon. The unit provides all aspects of solid tumour and neuro-oncology, malignant haemato-oncology, haemoglobinopathies and non-malignant haematology and haemostasis/thrombosis care, apart from allogeneic transplantation. Oxford hasJoint Accreditation Committee-ISCT & EBMT (JACIE)accreditation for the administration of high dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell rescue. Patients requiring allogeneic transplantation are referred to Bristol/London services. The unit provides supraregional support for haemophilia and Haemoglobinopathy services, covering Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Wiltshire.



The Children’s Hospital Oxford at the John Radcliffe Hospital Campus is the Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) for the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance (TVCA), providing tertiary haematology/oncology servicesfor designated Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCUs) in Swindon, Reading, Milton Keynes, High Wycombe/Stoke Mandeville and Slough (Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital). The unit has excellent relationships with paediatricians in the POSCUs.

Outline Job Plan



An indicative timetable and Job Plan is outlined below. The final Job Plan for the post will be agreed with the clinical lead upon appointment and will be subject to review.



Summary of main duties:
• Participate in management of inpatients
• Mange day care activity
• Organisation of investigations and follow-up test results
• After appropriate training:• Perform bone marrow aspirates and trephines, and lumbar punctures with intrathecal chemotherapy
• Prescribe chemotherapy

Inpatient facilities are based on Kamran’s Ward at the Children’s Hospital Oxford. This dedicated 9-bedded ward provides care for patients requiring chemotherapy or for the management of treatment- or disease-related complications.
