Crynodeb

A Senior Research Associate is sought to join the research group of Prof Cris Halsall (Director of LEC) to investigate the environmental fate of pesticides, particularly with regards to their fate in closed-cropping horticultural systems like polytunnels and greenhouses.

You will work closely with Prof Cris Halsall’s laboratory operation and undertake both laboratory and field-based experiments to understand chemical degradation over a range of contrasting environmental conditions for key pesticide actives approved for use in closed cropping systems. You will work alongside PhD students in this area and help supervise laboratory activities. The post will also entail working with an array of external partners. Tasks include investigating pesticide fate and degradation on plant surfaces under varying conditions of light and temperature. Understanding light transmission through agricultural plastic cladding with use of a sophisticated spectroradiometer, with the goal of developing algorithms that predict pesticide fate for an array of solar irradiances and ambient air temperatures. Data analysis and publication opportunities will be pursued as part of this role.

You will have laboratory experience working with trace chemicals and in organic chemical analysis using chromatography-mass spectrometry instrumentation. You will join a small friendly research team, and you should have excellent communication, organisation and time-management skills and demonstrate a strong team-work ethic.

LEC offers a highly collegial and stimulating environment for career development based on departmental values and embedded Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) considerations and actions. We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research. Furthermore, we are active and progressive around sustainability, wellbeing and decolonising agendas.

All interested candidates are encouraged to contact Professor Cris Halsall for informal enqueries (c.halsall@lancaster.ac.uk)

An enthusiastic individual is sought for this full-time (1 FTE) 3 year-fixed post. The third year of funding is dependent on the submission of a Fellowship-type proposal within the first two years of the post.
