We are looking to recruit a substantive Acute Oncology Consultant. This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week to work within acute oncology.

The applicant will deliver 10PAs including 2.5 SPA and admin time within acute oncology care to inpatients on the Acute Assessment Unit. The Trust provides an inpatient service for selected non-elective admissions where the reason for admission is primarily related to the patient’s underlying malignant diagnosis or its treatment. All admissions are already in receipt of oncology care at the Trust. The normal route of admission is via our 24hr hotline which triages patients and diverts patients to an Acute Trust A&E if appropriate(e.g. chest pain/acute abdominal pain). Those who are admitted usually spend the first 24 – 72 hours on our acute assessment unit.

The successful applicant will review all non-surgical admissions, and lead a multidisciplinary ward round reviewing inpatients on the AAU. The Hospitalist is not expected to take oncology treatment decisions which will remain the responsibility of the patient’s Oncology team.

The appointee will be based at The Christie Withington site.
They will provide senior input to the following areas of delivery:
• Outpatient clinics
• Inpatient Services
• Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings

The role will be responsible for: Daily consultant ward round and management of all non-surgical admissions to the acute assessment unit. Liaising with parent oncology teams to provide optimal patient care
• Participating in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up to date
• protocols, guidelines and clinical audit, under the supervision of the other consultants in in the unit.
• Contribute to current research projects and establish new opportunities to expand and
• develop research within the team.
• Revision and development of evidence-based protocols for patients and undertaking the
• administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.
• Maintaining a level of continuing professional development consistent the recommendations
• of the Royal College and Physicians.
• Contributing to the undergraduate teaching of medical students on oncology topics.
• Providing lectures for the busy postgraduate teaching programme.
• Actively contributing to the training of juniors doctors and other multi-disciplinary team
members in both in-patient and outpatient departments.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

The medical establishment provides two consultants within the department. The appointee will be based at the Christie Hospital and will provide senior input to the following areas of delivery:

• Acute assessment unit (AAU)
• Ambulatory acute care unit (AACU)

The role will be responsible for:
• Daily consultant ward round and management of all non-surgical admissions to the acute assessment unit.
• Support of patients managed through the acute ambulatory unit
• Liaising with parent oncology teams to provide optimal patient care.
• Participating in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up to date protocols, guidelines and clinical audit
• Contribute to current research projects and establish new opportunities to expand and develop research within the team.
• Revision and development of evidence-based protocols for patients and undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.
• Maintaining a level of continuing professional development consistent the recommendations of the Royal College and Physicians.
• Contributing to the undergraduate teaching of medical students on acute oncology topics.
• Providing lectures for the busy postgraduate teaching programme


The post holder will have access to office accommodation with computer, intranet and internet and secretarial support.
