The Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in Environmental Data Analysis one of four PDRAs being recruited under the research project "Satellite-Aided Technologies for advancing resilience: Guarding energy services under climate hazards, risks, and disasters (SAT-Guard)". This research project is funded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) cross research council responsive mode (CRCRM) pilot scheme, supporting new and creative interdisciplinary ideas emerging from the research community.

The SAT-Guard research project is from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026 (two years). The SAT-Guard team consists of the following.

  • Durham University

o [Project lead] Prof Hongjian Sun (Director of Research, Dept. of Engineering)

o [Co-lead] Prof Bruce Malamud (Director and Wilson Chair of Hazard and Risk, Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience)

o [Co-lead] Prof Daniel Donoghue (Dept of Geography).

o [Co-lead] Prof Simone Abram (Director, Durham Energy Institute and Professor Dept of Anthropology)

o PDRA1 (supervised by Prof Sun)

o PDRA2 (supervised by Profs Malamud & Donoghue)

o PDRA3 (supervised by Prof Abram

  • Northumbria University

o [Co-lead] Prof Eamon Scullion (Dept Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering)

o [Co-lead] Dr Jing Jiang (Dept Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering)

o PDRA4 (supervised by Prof Scullion and Dr Jiang)

This advertisement is for PDRA2, supervised by Profs Malamud & Donoghue. The successful applicant will be based out of the IHRR building.

The SAT-Guard project is motivated by the transition towards a sustainable energy system in the UK, which requires a comprehensive, equitable, and inclusive strategy that considers the environmental, economic, and social aspects of future energy systems. The power grid is increasingly vulnerable to climate and weather-related hazards such as storms, which pose a significant risk to the continuity of power supply and our communities.

The SAT-Guard project aims to address multifaceted challenges by developing innovative Satellite-aided mechanisms designed to manage power grids proactively. The system will enable flexible and socially conscious energy management, and ensure swift and efficient power supply restoration following climate and weather-related hazards. SAT-Guard seeks to pioneer a path towards a resilient, equitable, and sustainable energy future for the UK.
