Orkney Islands Council is looking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced practitioner to the post of Class Teacher (HT Management Time) at Rousay Community School.

Orkney lies eight miles north of the Scottish mainland and is the smallest Local Authority in Scotland. There is a strong cultural life and visitors world-wide are attracted to the scenery, history and archaeology. Orkney is home to a cosmopolitan community of about 20,000 residents and, among its many attributes, offers a safe environment, excellent educational and recreational facilities, a community spirit and exceptional quality of life, with reasonably priced housing.

The island of Rousay is nicknamed ‘Egypt of the North’ due to its archaeological diversity and importance. It has a unique landscape and a depth of natural beauty. The school is situated near the beach and the island has an abundance of wildlife providing superb opportunities for outdoor learning alongside a community garden and poly tunnel. Island life has a strong sense of community and the islanders are welcoming. Rousay is perfectly positioned and has an excellent ferry service to mainland Orkney, meaning that there would be the option of living on the mainland or on Rousay itself for those wanting to be part of a small island community.

Rousay Community School serves the islands of Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre. There are currently 13 children from P 1-7 and 3 children in the nursery. The school has one class P1-7 with a highly differentiated and child centred curriculum.

The school is managed by a Teaching Head, as such the post will entail providing management and planning time for the head teacher. This role will provide opportunities to be fully part of school and island life and is an essential role in supporting a shared planning approach to the delivery of high quality learning and teaching. The school is well resourced and has dedicated teachers and support staff who go above and beyond expectations. They are truly committed to providing the best possible outcomes for all the children.

You are strongly encouraged to visit the school to gain a real sense of what we are all about.

You should be enthusiastic and show a commitment and desire to continually improve the quality of learning and teaching.

Applicants must be registered, or in the process of registering, with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

The post is subject to membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme in respect of regulated work with children.

Prospective applicants are invited to discuss the post by contacting Angela Ferguson, Head Teacher on 01856 821226 or e-mail angela.ferguson@glow.orkneyschools.org.uk.

The salary applicable is based on the SNCT Salary Tables plus Distant Islands Allowance.

Closing Date: 23:59 on Sunday 5 January 2025

Please note that interview expenses will be paid for this post, in accordance with Council policy
