A Vacancy at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

This post is for a Junior Clinical Fellow in General, Complex benign Upper GI and Metabolic / Bariatric Surgery. The department is the tertiary NHS referral centre both for Elective and Emergency Bariatric surgery for Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria / The lake district. This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire NHS Trust.

We wish to appoint a Junior Clinical Fellow on a 12 month FTC basis with a special focus on Complex Benign upper GI and Bariatric surgery. The successful candidates will be joining an enthusiastic and forward-thinking department of General Surgery comprising of 13 Consultants. The department is currently undergoing growth and considerable restructure and the appointments are essential to this.

There will be opportunity to attend clinics and Theatres in both general surgery and specialist bariatric surgery.

The appointee is expected to take on a research project in Bariatric or Complex Benign Upper GI surgery for which time will be allocated and supported by Consultant supervisors to present regionally, nationally, and internationally as well encouraged and supported to publish in peer reviewed journals. The post would be ideal for candidates who are hoping to apply for both core and higher surgical training in the future.

The job plan is based on a standard full-time contract plus a separate contract for on-call after discussion with the successful candidate. You will be required to work with one of the UGI surgical teams and this translates to supporting the consultants including emergency demand, general clinics, theatre sessions and ward rounds plus time set aside for research, study and administration. The job plan may be adjusted depending on the service requirements and following consultation with the post holder.

Direct Clinical Care will include the following:
• “Hot” Emergency Outpatient Clinics and Emergency Case Operating Sessions
• Clinical Administration / Ward Rounds
• Outpatient clinics on both sites
• Clinical research activity
• Elective Surgery
• Daytime week and weekend cover of the Emergency on call
• Rota’d weekend ward round

The department offers excellent training and development opportunities, and the post holders are expected to support the elective and non-elective demand and participate in the daytime and weekend on call rota.

The post is offered on the basis that the successful applicant will work flexibly and join the on call rota undertaking General Surgery duties; the rate of on call will be 1 in 11 and the successful applicant will be remunerated appropriately for on call work in line with existing terms and conditions.
