Crynodeb

The Death Management, Inquiries and Coroners (DMIC) unit sits within the Ministry of Justice’s (MoJ) Civil, Tribunals and Administration of Justice (CTAJ) Directorate. The directorate brings together teams covering policy related to civil law and justice, tribunals, fees, death management and irregular migration.

This role involves leadership of a team of around 18 people and a total budget of around £8 million. It is a fast paced, high-profile and diverse role spanning policy and delivery and requiring frequent engagement with Minsters and senior stakeholders across Whitehall and the criminal justice system.

The role will report to the Director of Civil, Tribunals and Administration of Justice. You will work closely with other government departments. You will provide overall leadership, decisions and direction for the unit, ensuring the strategic direction remains aligned with any changes in political or business priorities. There is a high degree of autonomy with the role and the ability to shape these important and impactful policy areas.

The role includes the following responsibilities:

Provide visible and strong leadership for wide range of relevant death management, inquiries and coroners policy to ensure that burial, cremation and emerging modern alternatives are fit for purpose.
Oversee a case working function who review and approve applications for the Children's Funeral Fund, exhumation licensing and churchyard closures to ensure it meets service stands and provides high-quality decisions.
Lead complex analytical and policy development work across a range of short- and medium-term projects, securing political buy in and cross-Whitehall support.
Set and oversee a broad strategic work programme for the unit which reflects political priorities, working closely with Special Advisers, press and private offices and with Ministers as well as with policy senior leaders.
Establishing strong, senior-level relationships to influence decision-making at the centre of government. This role involves regular engagement with Ministers.
Being part of the Civil, Tribunals, and Administration of Justice senior team, working collaboratively with colleagues in the directorate to deliver cross-cutting priorities.
Leading a team of eighteen staff, cultivating a culture of performance, delivery, inclusivity and support.
Management of a delegated budget of c£8 million.
