6-month Fixed term/ Secondment post for 37.5 hrs per week for a Community Perinatal Mental Health Nurse.
Hillingdon Community Perinatal Mental Health Team, based at Riverside Centre, Hillingdon Hospital are recruiting for a Band 7, for a 6-month fixed term/secondment post. We are looking for a Mental Health Nurse who is looking to make a difference whilst working in an environment that promotes staff development and training opportunities. CNWL is passionate about developing its own staff, driving them to go on to become more established practitioners and this post is no different.
We are looking for a skilled , experienced and passionate practitioner who must have a warm and approachable disposition and have very good communication and interpersonal skills. They must be a team player, be confident and motivated as well as being flexible and able to show initiative. They must be robust and resourceful and willing to work outside their comfort zone in an environment which can sometimes be demanding and stressful.
The successful applicant may have contact with patients or service users. As an NHS Trust we strongly encourage and support vaccination as this remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and of course patients and service users when working on our healthcare settings.
The applicant must have excellent clinical skills, be able to demonstrate an ability to complete comprehensive mental state examinations, thoroughly assess risk, formulate safe and effective risk management plans and document and communicate these clearly and concisely.
We expect applicants to have experience of managing caseloads in a complex multidisciplinary/multiagency context. We also expect applicants to have experience of using formal child protection processes and being involved in interagency work with families. An awareness of current policies and practice in this area is essential.
To help support you with the above we offer a robust induction and tailored training is given and encouraged. As an employer, CNWL and London Perinatal Network also offer various training opportunities, dependent on how long you are in post and on your development needs. In addition, we offer regular in-house training opportunities to learn from each other which aims to continuously improve our practice.
The Team provides a Monday-Friday, 9.00am-5.00pm service. The successful applicant would be expected to have the flexibility to work occasional extended opening hours to facilitate early or late clinic appointments, home visits or training.
The Perinatal Mental Health service provides specialist, multidisciplinary perinatal mental health care for women from preconception, during pregnancy and up to two years postnatal who live in the boroughs of Hillingdon
The team works closely with Maternity Services on site as well with local community and inpatient mental health services, primary care services, social services and a wide range of other statutory and third sector organisations.

• Job Summary

The team base will be within one of the maternity services or in close proximity The post holder will be required to be flexible and to use office space on other sites in the Boroughs in their day to day working
The service is integrated with Maternity Services at each hospital sites and the post holder will work very closely with midwives and obstetricians
The service will also be embedded in the local community and will provide home visits, outreach clinics in children’s centres, primary care and will work closely with charities and other third sector organisations
The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively and in partnership with Local Secondary Mental Health Services, Maternity Services, Primary Care, Local Authority Services, Acute Hospitals, Voluntary and Third Sector Organisations and local Mother and Baby Units.
1.1 The purpose of this specialist service is:
· Perinatal mental health disorders are those that complicate pregnancy and the postpartum year. The Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service will offer a range of services for women who are planning to conceive, during their pregnancy and the postpartum period that:
• m Have an existing mental health condition or personality disorder.
• Develop a mental health condition or at risk of doing so.
• Have become new parents and experience severe difficulties during the parent-infancy relationship building.
• To ensure that women (whether adults or young women under 18) who are pregnant and booked for delivery at the local maternity hospital and/or have infants under one year old, receive appropriate screening and identification of their mental health needs and are managed accordingly throughout this period
• To provide supervision to the team of other staff, including midwives and health visitors, who manage one-to-one caseloads of pregnant women suffering from or at risk of developing mental illness
• To provide on-going training, supervision, consultation and advice on mental health issues in childbearing to a range of professionals who work closely with this group of women.
1.2 The service aims to provide a pragmatic and user-friendly service where the post holder will take a leadership role in the further establishment, development and maintenance of structures to ensure the team’s accessibility, excellent communication, excellent assessment of patients and provision of expert assistance and advice about the management of mental health issues in the perinatal period. The post holder will be pivotal to the establishment of the ethos of the team and to the integration of Perinatal Mental Health Services and Maternity Services through development of and maintenance of good working relationships and collaborative partnerships with the in-patient services.
1.3 This will be achieved through:
• Embedding as a specialist nurse within in-patient and community maternity services to perform multiagency liaison work, offering easy-to-access expert advice
• Working closely with Children’s Centres, charities and other third sector organisations to educate, improve access and outreach to local communities. This would include increased home visiting and the establishment of community satellite clinics and a move away from hospital based services where possible
• Regular targeted training programmes which will be disseminated and evaluated for a range of professionals
• Direct work in complex cases with women booked for delivery at the local maternity hospital, providing comprehensive assessment, treatment, planning and review
• Attendances at perinatal CPA meetings, to advise and ensure procedures are implemented
• Supporting the establishment of peer support groups in the local community
• Supporting local antenatal classes to educate and promote positive mental health
• Setting up a “virtual perinatal team” of champions/named professionals, using existing staff within CMHTs, Psychology/IAPT services, Midwifery teams, Health Visitor teams, CAMHs, Children & Families Social Services and GP services. This will raise awareness and improve the knowledge and skills of staff locally who work closely with this group of women, thus improving safety and quality of the care provided
• Working closely with the existing Liaison Psychiatry Service’s and Mother and Baby Unit
• Contributing to the development and dissemination of robust integrated CNWL /local Maternity Hospital perinatal care pathways and policies
• Contributing to the on-going development and establishment of Community Perinatal Mental Health Service
• Attend and contribute specialist mental health knowledge at Child Protection Conferences, psychosocial meetings and birth planning meetings
