Patient Care 1. To provide high quality specialist oral health care for adults with additional needs in a variety of settings, including clinics, hospitals and domiciliary settings. This will include treatment of people with learning difficulties, mental health problems and challenging behaviour, complex medical histories, mobility problems, sensory disabilities, frail older people and other adults who fall within the treatment remit. 2. The post holder will take clinical leadership role, supporting local teams with complex cases and providing care to complex patients internally referred by colleagues. 3. To undertake clinical and non clinical duties, demonstrating and maintaining the competencies identified for a Band C specialist, set out in the Salaried Dentist terms and conditions of service. 4. To support and mentor other special care clinicians within the service, including accepting referrals, assisting in treatment planning and where necessary provision of dental care. 5. The Base for this post is Swindon. However, from time to time there will be a requirement to attend other clinics in the Wiltshire and Swindon area to provide Specialist opinion and treatment. 6. Patient management and dental care of patients requiring advanced behavioural management techniques and where appropriate sedation and general anaesthesia. This will include active involvement in GA lists at Great Western Hospital, Swindon. There may be occasions when GA cover is also required for GA lists at the Royal United Hospital, Bath and Salisbury District hospital, Salisbury. 7. Keep comprehensive contemporaneous clinical record in the computerised software system and familiarity with computerised notes systems and use of VDUs is essential. Complete statistical returns to monitor the services provided. 8. The provision of specialist in-service training to the dental team and to other colleagues and agencies as required. Policy and service development 9. To work with the Clinical Director, Assistant Clinical director and senior clinical colleagues to further develop sedation and other appropriate treatment modalities within the service. 10. To take a clinical leadership role in developing special care dentistry, including providing strategic advice to the Clinical Director, Business Manager and NHSE, and the Integrated Care Board. 11. To liaise and develop close links with hospital consultants and other colleagues. 12. To maintain professional knowledge and awareness of current dental issues, especially regarding special care dentistry. 13. Continuing postgraduate education will be encouraged and supported, especially in the post holders areas of special interests, consistent with service needs. Governance 14. The management of the day-to-day operation of the dental clinics at which the post holder is based and the supervision of DCPs and dentists. 15. Participation in dental audit, clinical governance. Leading governance in their specialist area 16. To adapt flexibly to changes which occur in the service and assist in implementing such changes, as agreed with the Clinical Director, GWH NHSFT and commissioners. 17. To be aware of, apply and demonstrate leadership with regard to GWH NHSFT policies and procedures. 18. Be compliant with Trust statutory and mandatory training and with GDC enhanced CPD. 19. The post holder will also be expected to assist the Clinical Director and undertake such duties as may be delegated from time to time. 20. To be a member of the CDS Governance Group and a member of the MCN in Special Care Dentistry Budget Responsibilities 21. This post is not a budget holding post; however the post holder will be required to support the Clinical Director in the efficient and effective use of resources. 22. All staff must ensure they use resources in a manner consistent with organisational objectives and policies, ensuring that resources are realistic, justified and of clear benefit to the organisation. Line Management 23. The post holder may be asked to support the line management of Band A dentists and Foundation Training , including responsibility for appraisal, absence monitoring, CPD and governance. Other Responsibilities 24. This post will be based at a clinic for the purpose of claiming travel expenses and other allowances. Travel expenses will be paid in line with the Salaried Dentist contract. The post holder will be required to work from a variety of clinics and hospitals. 25. The post holder will be required to travel independently by car or other means to a variety of sites and at times will be required to transport other staff and equipment within the needs of the service. 26. In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed above, the post-holder may be required to perform other duties assigned by the Clinical Director from time to time, agreed in their job plan.
