Smart Cells International (SCI) is a biotechnology company specialising in the procurement, testing, processing, storage and distribution of human umbilical cord blood and tissue for therapeutic use. The company is UK based and has partner offices worldwide.
The Laboratory Technician role involves receipting, testing, aseptic processing and cryopreservation of umbilical cord blood and tissue samples and associated quality assurance. Processing of cord blood and tissue involves stringent clean room laboratory working. The post holder will be a key member of the team ensuring smooth running of this busy laboratory.
Qualifications and experience
Essential:
A degree in biomedical sciences or similar
Good basic IT skills
Good numerical ability

Previous laboratory experience
The Role
This role is a pivotal one in the SCI operation. The post holder will be accountable to the Head of Laboratory Operations and other senior laboratory staff on a day to day basis.
The role involves checking and receipting, full blood count and flow cytometric testing of cord blood, aseptic cleanroom based processing and cryopreservation of umbilical cord blood and tissue samples. Laboratory working frequently requires the need to wear cleanroom garments for long periods. The role involves working with liquid nitrogen and the relevant use of PPE. Active participation in all associated quality assurance is fundamental. Processing of cord blood and tissue involves stringent clean room laboratory working. Cleanroom and environmental maintenance with associated cleaning is a key part of the role. The post holder will be a key member of the team and will be expected to be able to work co-operatively and autonomously as required to ensure smooth running of this busy laboratory.
In all aspects of the role, full training will be given and the post holder will be expected to maintain an up to date training record and will be expected to participate in CPD.
The laboratory thrives on good communication which is maintained on a day to day basis and via regular laboratory meetings and the post holder will be expected to actively participate.
