Main Duties and Responsibilities The department offers exposure and training in Laparoscopic Colorectal, Laparoscopic Benign Upper GI Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology as well as General Surgery. The successful candidate will work in a team at Northampton General Hospital and is available from December 2024 until April 2025 with an opportunity to extend further for suitable candidates. This post is suited to FY2-CT2 level candidates, who would like further training in general surgery to advance their career and enhance their CV. Specifically, candidates will be supported to obtain core surgical training competencies and MRCS qualifications, in preparation for applying for higher surgical training. This is a service post, but clinical and surgical training will be provided to suit the candidates needs. The post holder may take up a whole time, maximum part time or job share contract. The successful candidate will participate in the General Surgery SHO full shift rota comprising of 12 SHO grades covering Urology, Vascular and General Surgery emergencies. Duties will include the full range of clinical activities, operating lists, outpatient clinics, ward rounds, surgical on call and supporting the emergency theatres. Additionally, successful candidates will be supported in research and audit activity. The Trust has a strong medical education department with regular teaching. The Department of Surgery has ten GI Surgeons, six Vascular Consultants and six Urologists. We provide specialist services including Laparoscopic Oncological Colorectal surgery, Laparoscopic Repair of Complex Hernias, benign Upper GI & hepatobiliary surgery and inflammatory bowel disease surgery including ileo-anal pouch surgery. We additionally perform robotic prostatectomy and rectal surgery using the Da Vinci platform. The vascular services at NGH and KGH were reconfigured in 2012 to form the Northamptonshire Vascular Service. NGH is the centre providing elective arterial surgery, 24/7 emergency vascular surgery and emergency interventional vascular radiology procedures for the patients of Northamptonshire. Key Duties Surgery ward rounds and ongoing inpatient care Attending elective theatre lists Attending outpatient clinics and endoscopy Being trained and supported in the development of operative skills Participation in Clinical Governance, including effective clinical audit, continuing medical education and mandatory training. Contributing to departmental audit and research with consultant supervision. Opportunities are available to undertake personal research and enhance the CV. Participation in teaching programmes for medical staff, medical students (University of Leicester and University of Oxford) and other hospital employees, as required. Annual leave entitlement and study leave requests will be granted within the framework of the departments annual leave and study leave policies. Study leave is encouraged particularly in areas of interest to the post-holder. The hospital has an excellent Post-Graduate Medical Centre that has just been extensively refurbished with library, audio-visual aids, seminar and committee rooms, as well as a comprehensive range of recreational facilities, swimming pools, squash and tennis courts etc. This job description reflects the present requirements of the post and it does not form part of the contract of employment.
