The Council are seeking a Visitor Information Assistant to provide inspiration, information, and assistance to visitors before and during their stay and assist in the smooth and efficient running of the Visitor Information Centre and Hollytrees Museum.

Duties of the role

Colchester is a visitor destination with ambition; one with an important past, a vibrant present and an exciting future. As a member of the Visit Colchester tourism team based in the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) in Hollytrees Museum, you will offer a friendly and professional welcome and a range of services directly to customers, both in person and online, ensuring they have the best possible experience.

The VIC team are also responsible for the payment desk and day-to-day operation of Hollytrees Museum, and the post holder will be one of a number of key holders with responsibility for the maintenance and security of the building and contents, and the safety of all those who use it. Some light cleaning and tidying of the public areas is undertaken daily.

Days and hours of work can vary depending on operational requirements but will normally be Saturday and then one weekday every other week across a four week rota – an average of 10 hours per week. Rotas are issued a minimum of four weeks in advance.

Qualifications and skills required

To be successful in this role you will be passionate about Colchester and the wider city area and all it has to offer, ready to help visitors get the most out of their stay and local residents to explore what’s on their doorstep.

You will take on a wide range of tasks demanding excellent customer care and communication skills, including the ability to research and present information in response to enquiries and to process sales and bookings an efficient way.

The post holder will be jointly responsible for carrying out administrative tasks associated with income generation which require attention to detail and accuracy, including the recording and reconciliation of income.

An existing knowledge of the local area, fluency in any or all of French, German, Italian or Spanish and a current driving licence are all desirable attributes for this role.
