The Human Element team is part of the Seafarer Safety & Health Branch which promotes safety and decent living and working conditions for seafarers through legislation and non-regulatory means.
The role of the Human Element Specialist is to help develop and promote continual improvement in maritime safety through regulatory and non-regulatory measures in support of MCA's HE policy and strategy. The principal focus is on improving maritime safety performance by developing human performance capability and understanding across the maritime industry.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Development of human element knowledge by identifying and overseeing research on human element issues, participating in project and contract management, acting as a focal point for communication with human element specialists in other organisations and industries and investigating new areas for potential MCA human element activity.
- Engagement with stakeholders, including providing Secretariat function for, and participating in the Human Element Advisory Group (HEAG).
- Supporting UK human element activity at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other bodies.
- Participating in collaborative projects e.g. with overseas administrations, other Government Departments, shipping companies, human element consortia etc.
- Development of regulations by supporting the development, revision and implementation of UK and international legislation as they apply to seafarer safety and the human element.
- Maintaining continuous professional development and ensure that professional knowledge is up to date.
