What skills and experience we're looking for
Experience and Qualifications:
Holds a recognised DfE teaching qualification
Has teaching experience including an understanding of the National Curriculum (Knowledge of both primary and secondary curriculum is desirable)
Has experience in curriculum development and differentiation
Holds a Teacher of the Deaf qualification - Desirable
Has an interest in deaf education and a commitment to train alongside a willingness to learn/improve British Sign Language skills
Relevant subject specialism to contribute to an aspect of curriculum development
Knowledge and Skills:
Demonstrates a good understanding of the qualities of excellent teaching and learning.
Demonstrates excellent classroom management and behaviour management skills.
Has a commitment to high quality teaching across subjects and to effectively support/ teach in integrated and department settings, raising standards of achievement.
Shows a clear understanding of equality of opportunity for all pupils and staff and how it relates to the inclusion and expectations of deaf children.
Has an ability to plan and evaluate individual programmes of work
Has high expectations of self and others
Attitude and Commitment
Demonstrates energy, enthusiasm and excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Has a commitment to a bilingual policy and the use of British Sign Language
Has a commitment to work as part of a team, both in their department and across the school
Shows initiative in a variety of contexts
A commitment to support colleagues and to develop the school positively

Blanche Nevile School is a well-known and highly regarded School for Deaf students. Its history dates back to 1895 when it first opened.
We are an exciting, innovative and successful provision for deaf children aged 3 - 16. The Secondary school is co-located with Fortismere School, Muswell Hill. The Primary school is co-located with Highgate Primary School.
Phase: Secondary age range, although experience of working in the primary sector is welcomed and some teaching will be at the primary site.
Salary: MPS/UPS + Inner London Allowance + 1 SEN point – 32.5 hours per week
Permanent Contract
The school is on a journey to ‘Outstanding’ following a ‘Good’ Ofsted (February 2023).
“Pupils enjoy coming to this special school. They feel safe and they are happy. All pupils learn British Sign Language (BSL) as well as English. Communication threads through everything at the school. BSL is a vital and vibrant aspect of school life. Pupils and adults communicate throughout the day with humour and warmth.” (Ofsted 2023).
Teaching
We are looking for an excellent PSD/PSHE Teacher to join our skilled team of deaf and hearing staff. Other teaching specialisms are also valued by the school and will be considered within the successful applicant’s timetable.
Approach
We offer the best of both worlds through quality inclusion and small class specialist teaching with a commitment to a child centred, sign bilingual approach
The successful candidate will:
• have experience of teaching in the secondary phase
• have experience of working with children with SEND
• high expectations and excellent planning and differentiation skills
• have knowledge of British Sign Language or a commitment to work towards a minimum of BSL Level 3
• have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
A Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People (ToD) qualification is desirable but not essential. However, the successful applicant would be supported to undergo training in due course to gain this mandatory qualification if they did not already hold it. This would be funded by the school. Additional support and training will be given as required.
