Our vision is to be the world’s most inspiring Naval Museum. Our mission is to link Navy to Nation, inspiring learning, enjoyment and engagement with the story of the Royal Navy, and its impact in shaping the modern world.
We are looking for a vibrant and engaging individual to join the Collections team as a Principal Curator at really exciting moment. NMRN is currently working on the delivery of a major capital development to reinterpret the history of the Royal Marines; to tell the fascinating stories of this critical branch of the Royal Navy from its inception in the 17th Century right up to the present day. This role will be critical to ensure that we capture, collect and reflect the collections and stories of Royal Marines from the last 50-100 years in particular.
Working alongside both colleagues and serving members of the Royal Navy, you will proactively seek to capture and curate objects and stories that can form part of the 2 million and growing collection to ensure that we continue to be a museum which reflects the diversity and innovation of the modern and contemporary Royal Navy. With confidence, you will be the voice of the authority for the business on the modern and contemporary Navy, sharing your knowledge and expertise in person and through multiple digital platforms.
Although the role is based in Portsmouth, there will be the opportunity for occasional travel to our other sites in Gosport, Belfast, Hartlepool and Yeovilton.

Key Opportunities

* You will have the opportunity to join project teams to lead the planning and interpretation of the Royal Navy’s modern and contemporary stories, especially that of the Royal Marines as part of the Boathouse 6 reinvigoration project.
* You will work with colleagues across the business to contribute knowledge and expertise on the modern and contemporary Royal Navy to our digital engagement, future adult programming and STEM activities.
* You will work with the wider Collections team to create a single coherent collection, following the Collection Development Policy filling gaps in the collection around the modern and contemporary Royal Navy and improve collections access to the same.
* You will have the opportunity to raise the profile of the National Museum through media work, sector engagement, research, publication and partnership.

Knowledge/Experience
You will have:

* a breadth of understanding of modern Royal Naval history and the contemporary service, with expertise in one period, branch or specialist area.
* an understanding of the contemporary Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
* understanding of the development and delivery of heritage projects.
* a high level of professional knowledge demonstrated by an appropriate professional qualification, or significant equivalent experience and evidence of continuous professional development.
* experience of working within the heritage sector, and of exhibition/interpretation development or project management would be an advantage.
* experience of sharing understanding through publication, broadcasting, public speaking, or training, including raising the profile of projects.
* the ability to lead, motivate, inspire, influence and empower staff.
* experience of budget planning and obtaining best value from external contracts.
* experience of developing projects, and longer-term partnerships with external organisations.

We Provide

* The opportunity to be part of a friendly and diverse workplace within a unique heritage environment.
* Group pension plan with Royal London (6% employer contributions, 2% employee contributions and death in service benefit).
* Free onsite parking, on receipt of a base pass.
* 25 days’ annual leave (plus bank holidays), increasing to 30 days’ annual leave (plus bank holidays) after 5 years’ service.
* Occupational sick pay.
