This post offers the unique opportunity for a Specialist Doctor in Pain Medicine and Neuromodulation to work with our friendly and enthusiastic team at Barts Health NHS Trust highly specialised adult pain management service with a fully integrated neuromodulation unit. The pain service uses a clinical network model spanning across primary, secondary and tertiary care.

This is a versatile role working independently as pain medicine specialist in the community-based MSK pain clinics and pain intervention lists and assisting consultants in the neuromodulation operating list and multidisciplinary team (MDT) work. The postholder will also support the Neuromodulation Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in the programming and patient education clinics. This 80% part-time post is newly created to maintain the pain consultant-led MSK clinic and allow the neuromodulation service to expand its capacity. Our neuromodulation tertiary care centre is staffed by pain physicians, neurosurgeons, clinical nurse specialists, pain management psychologists, administrative staff and research staff.

The community-based MSK pain clinic in the London Borough of Newham is a long- established successful MDT service in collaboration with I-Health and other primary care MSK providers. Referrals by this clinic to secondary care for interventional pain management will form the majority of the postholder’s injection lists at Barts Health to provide continuity of care for our patients.

The post holder will work independently in community pain clinics and attend MDT clinics.

The post holder must be competent in the full repertoire of pain management injections expected in GMC pain medicine credentials or after 12 months advanced pain medicine training. They will perform these interventions at Mile End Hospital and other operating suites at Barts Health.

Presence of two experienced operators facilitates safe and rapid surgery allowing maximum efficiency and through-put as part of good quality of care. The post holder will be expected to assist and operate in neuromodulation lists according to the case mix and their specialist skills.

Continuity of care and access to medical advice in the aftercare following implant i.e. to address any wound issues. Surgical troubleshooting and preparing patients who require replacement or revision of devices. Programming and activation of devices as needed. This will lead to increased patient satisfaction and early detection of post implant issues.

Collates and presents data on a monthly basis. The post holder will be responsible for maintaining National Neuromodulation Registry (NNR), a statutory requirement and part of GIRFT process. The post holder will also present a Complex Programming Clinic report for discussion allowing outcomes and standards to be measured prospectively.
