Summary


The Department of Frailty and Ageing cares for older patients across a variety of acute settings from initial
attendance in the Emergency Department through to safe discharge back into the community.
The team work in the following areas:
• Frailty Intervention Team (FIT)- FIT are an ED based multidisciplinary team based at the front door
of the hospital reviewing frailer patients with the aim of avoiding unnecessary admissions into
hospital. FIT has been in place since 2015 and has won several national awards.
• Frailty and Ageing Beds (FAB) – This is a 19 bedded frailty friendly assessment area run by a MDT
that understand frailty. The Unit is has dedicated consultant presence from 8am – 7pm and provides
comprehensive integrated care for direct admissions from GPs and ED.
• Base wards- we have 4 frailty base wards located on the 9th and 8th floors. Each ward is supported
by 2 consultants. The consultants work alongside various members of the MDT including therapist
and nursing colleagues. Many elements of CGA (Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment) are
performed on the wards.
• NCTR (No Criteria To Reside) wards- we have 3 wards under our care. 2 wards on the 13th floor
and 1 ward (C20) at Castle Hill Hospital.



As a Trust grade registrar, the post holder would be expected to do an independent ward round and make
clinical decisions, support junior doctors, see referrals from other specialities and perform procedures eg
lumbar puncture. There will be on call commitments as part of the RMO rota. There will also be the
opportunity to go on a consultant led teaching ward round . The post holder will be expected to work across
all the frailty wards including C20 in CHH and the 13th floor in HRI. C20 and the 13th floor are NCTR wards.
There is good support from consultants and plenty of opportunities to train and develop

There are 12 substantive and 3 locum consultants within the department. Dr Kirsten Richards is the Clinical
Director and Dr Yoghini Nagandran is the Clinical Lead for the department. Laura Cowan is the Matron and
Matthew Drewicz is the Business Manager for Frailty. All wards are supported by Band 7 nurse managers
and a matron that overseas these wards.
