Job objectives and responsibilities

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities, and duties: Regularly conduct thorough fire safety inspections and audits across the entire prison estate, identifying potential hazards, and ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations. Undertake comprehensive fire risk assessments, evaluating existing controls and recommending improvements to minimize risks. Develop and deliver fire safety training programs for all staff and prisoners, including induction sessions and refresher courses. Organize and oversee regular fire drills to enhance preparedness. Contribute to the development and maintenance of fire emergency response plans, ensuring clarity and effectiveness in the event of a fire. Support the Facilities Management Department in the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire safety equipment, including fire alarms, extinguishers, and emergency lighting. Conduct investigations into fire incidents, identifying root causes, and making recommendations to prevent future occurrences. Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including the local fire and rescue service, prison management, HMPPS Fire Safety team, and health and safety representatives.





Person Specification

Essential Experience: Proven knowledge of fire safety legislation, regulations, and best practices. Ability to conduct thorough risk assessments, identifying potential hazards and implementing effective controls. Excellent communication and training skills to deliver effective fire safety instructions to diverse audiences. Strong organizational and planning skills to manage inspections, audits, and training programs effectively. Ability to identify and resolve fire safety issues promptly and efficiently. Previous experience of collaborative working with colleagues and external partners to achieve fire safety goals. Basic to intermediate IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Desirable Experience: A recognized fire safety qualification, such as NEBOSH Fire Certificate or equivalent. Previous experience working in a prison or similar secure setting is advantageous.
