This role is based in the UK and will be working on site in our UK based College.

In order to comply with our mandatory pre-employment checks, the successful candidate will be required to provide original identification documents in person to our UK based HR Team.

This role is pro rata, so the salary you will be receiving is £7,786.68 - £8,533.98 per annum. For any roles that start part way through the academic year, the annual salary will be pro rata to the remaining months.

PROTECTION OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSONS (THE CHILDREN’S ACT 1989)

Any offers of appointment will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (formerly CRB), a certificate of good conduct if applicable, plus receipt of satisfactory references, Occupational Health clearance, an understanding of safeguarding and qualifications verification. An Enhanced DBS check is required for this position as you will be working within 'Regulated Activity' within a specific place (i.e. the College).

This role is classed as working within Regulated Activity. It is an offence to apply for this role if you are barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children. By applying for this position, you agree to an Enhanced DBS check in line with DBS regulations.

BACKGROUND TO THE POST

Warwickshire College is a College that provides more than just qualifications. It is a college that puts students first. To ensure that all our students reach their potential and are not discriminated against we wish to appoint a Communication Support Worker to Deaf/Hearing Impaired students to join our established, experienced team within our Centre for Deaf Students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

✓ Interpreting using British Sign Language.
✓ Performing the role of a Learning Support Assistant during class.
✓ Note Taking, acting as a scribe during exams and lessons.
✓ Supporting the students out of class (assignment work etc) and during extracurricular activities, such as educational trips or work experience.
✓ Working closely with the curriculum to encourage inclusive learning.
✓ Working closely with the Coordinator for Services to Deaf Students to plan and deliver a high-quality, professional service.
✓ Building glossaries of technical language for the student.
✓ Promoting equality and integration of Deaf and Hearing Impaired students.
✓ Develop, review and implement strategies during the academic year, using individual learning profiles and other college systems.
✓ Communicate appropriate information to other staff including managers and course tutors.
✓ Undertake record keeping and other administrative tasks, ensuring the confidential nature of the work as required.
✓ Complete individual Risk Assessment and Individual Evacuation Plans.
✓ Provide deaf awareness sessions to the students’ tutor groups, other related student groups and other external organisations where required.
✓ Provide Learning Support to non-deaf students where appropriate.

OFFERS OF WORK

For the successful candidate a conditional offer of work will be made. Our offer of work will be conditional upon a number of mandatory pre-employment checks, to include but not limited to: DBS, Barred List check, right to work check, internet search, TRA check (academic posts).

ESSENTIAL ATTAINMENTS

✓ GCSE Grade C or above in English and Mathematics, or Level 2 equivalent qualification, or willingness to work towards once in post.
✓ Level 2 or above qualification in British Sign Language or be a native BSL user having come from a deaf family/community
✓ Excellent administrative and organisational skills.
✓ Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

DESIRABLE ATTAINMENTS

✓ Level 3 in BSL or working towards the qualification.
✓ UK driving licence free from major endorsements and the use of a vehicle.

✓ Knowledge of issues within the Deaf community, current affairs and changes within the deaf community.
✓ A desire to be involved and interact with the deaf community/organisations on a regular basis.
