We are looking for a candidate who is keen to start or to continue their career in NHS as a Clinical coder.
We are looking for 2 WTE that will either be starting their clinical coding career as a band 4 or an established Clinical Coder entering at Band 5.
The Band 4 will be subjected to the clinical coding standard course (CCSC) as a gate way to a clinical coder position Band 5 position. E-learning theory and background will also be required as a basic introduction to a 4 step coding process, with basic anatomy and physiology
Band 5 To apply you must have experience in coding using ICD10 and OPCS classifications as well as having an excellent knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. The post holder requires a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual, committed to data quality, with excellent communication and organisation skills and the ability to work as part of a team to deliver timely and accurate coded data to meet Trust deadlines.

To abstract and code in an accurate, complete, and timely manner. To code all relevant clinical data relating to patient hospital activity within the trust in accordance with the prevailing guidelines and business and clinical targets. To promote and adhere to best practice.
• To abstract and analyse complex clinical information from patient records and other trust systems and translate this into coded format in line with National Standards, ensuring that diagnosis, operations and procedures are coded accurately, completely and on a timely basis on the Trust’s patient administration system (currently Care-Flow) via 3M coding system.
• To have a high level of knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
• To apply all up-to-date national and international classification rules and conventions when coding using the international statistical classification of disease and related health problems (currently ICD-10) and the office of population and consensus and surveys tabular list of classification of surgical operations and procedures (currently OPCS4)

The Finance Directorate actively promotes training and development within the team, we have developed a comprehensive finance education strategy and hold Level 2 accreditation in Towards Excellence and Future Focused Finance. We are an active member of the FSD (Finance Skills Development) Network, Future Focused Finance, and Towards Excellence scheme.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• To abstract and analyse complex clinical information from patient records and other trust systems and translate this into coded format in line with National Standards, ensuring that diagnosis, operations and procedures are coded accurately, completely and on a timely basis on the Trust’s patient administration system (currently Care-Flow) via 3M coding system.
• To have a high level of knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
• To apply all up-to-date national and international classification rules and conventions when coding using the international statistical classification of disease and related health problems (currently ICD-10) and the office of population and consensus and surveys tabular list of classification of surgical operations and procedures (currently OPCS4)
• To ensure that all patient episodes are coded and complete to meet agreed monthly deadlines.
• To liaise with all relevant staff to ensure prompt access to any documentation needed from the Clinical web Portal (CWP- Christie electronic patient record) to ensure completeness of data
• High-level knowledge of coding requirements for all specialties will be required, but each coder will develop specialism in a designated specialty and will be the promoter of best practice and mandatory coding guidelines for that specialty. This includes keeping up to date with all practice coding guidance and changes in internal practice and services which may impact on coding requirements for that specialty.
• Communicate training information and coding updates to other coding staff relevant to your designated specialty.
• Liaise with clinicians to ensure that patient documentation is complete and accurate to facilitate compliance with national standards and respond to clinicians’ queries with regards to coding and documentation requirements. Act as a lead coding contact for your designated specialty
• A strong commitment to continued professional development including attending in-house and external training to ensure that coding knowledge is current and reflects mandatory requirement and best practice. Implement new guidance and policies.
• Read appropriate clinical bulletins and other publications.
• Adhere to relevant local policies and procedures.
• Work with the clinical coding manager to ensure local policies and procedures are kept up to date.
• Act as a mentor and assist in the education of less experienced coders, or to all coders relating to your specialism.
• Use of own knowledge and judgment to translate complex cases with referral to the specialism coder or clinical coding manager where required.
• Undertake any other duties appropriate to the post designated by the clinical coding manager.
