Crynodeb

The successful candidate will work closely with the Consultant Renal Transplant Surgeons, Clinical Fellows, the Transplant SpRs, CT and FY1, the Transplant Nurse Practitioners and the nephrology team in the care of recent and established renal transplant patients, and in the care of other renal patients undergoing surgical procedures (e.g. vascular access, polycystic nephrectomy, and hernia repairs). The renal transplant surgical department is closely integrated with the transplant nephrology team, with whom we have an excellent relationship. Ward rounds are conducted jointly, providing a fantastic learning environment for trainees.

The surgical team provides live- and deceased-donor renal transplantation, dialysis access, and general surgery for patients with renal failure. In addition, there will be significant exposure to multi-organ abdominal retrieval surgery, and there may be opportunities for exposure to paediatric renovascular surgery. The post also includes responsibility for the supervision and training of the junior staff and teaching medical students.

The post holder will have the following duties:
• Out-patient clinics – assessment of CKD patients requiring vascular access or peritoneal dialysis and work-up for renal transplantation
• In-patient and day case operating lists
• Care of renal transplant in-patients
• Attendance and presentations at multidisciplinary meetings (transplant listing, vascular access, histopathology, radiology and review of deceased-donor offers)
• Participation in the audit and governance activities of the department

The on-call rota provides cover for both renal transplant surgery as well as the urology department on a 1 in 10 basis. The on-call commitments will therefore incorporate emergency transplant activity and surgical care of the renal failure population, as well as covering urological emergencies and out of hours urological care for patients. No previous experience of urology is required as close support is given by the urology consultant staff. This rota will be EWTD and New Deal compliant. The candidate will also be expected to cover elective and emergency in-patient and day case surgery, general, Transplant, out-patient clinics and regular ward work.
