Overview
Do you have strong analytical skills and enjoy problem solving? Do you enjoy working collaboratively and seeking opportunities to support continuous improvement initiatives?

If so, we would love to hear from you. We are seeking colleagues to join Social Security Scotland’s friendly and supportive Error Control and Debt Management branch, which is based within Social Security Scotland’s Fraud and Error Resolution Unit (FERU).

Everyone in Scotland should have the support they need to live their life and we believe they should be able to get it when and where they need it. That’s why Scotland’s Social Security agency is built around the people of Scotland. However official and client error is a known risk to the benefits being devolved, so error control measures are in place to respond.

As an Error Control Officer you will undertake error control activity and play an important role in contributing to the safeguarding of vital resources for the people of Scotland who need them. You will review error cases which have been identified by other teams within Social Security Scotland and determine whether or not an error has occurred. Where you find errors, it will be your responsibility to correct the error, issue any underpayments to the clients or refer the overpayment to our Recoveries team. You will also determine classifications and root causes of errors and be able to explain your decision with a written explanation.

As the successful candidate, you will ideally have some previous claims experience in error identification, correction, and payment classification, however this skill will be developed upon taking up the role. In addition, this role will provide opportunities to engage closely with project management staff, testing processes and systems and helping to influence the design of the service as we move through implementation.

Main Duties
• Investigate and correct errors for multiple benefits based on our Decision Maker’s guidance
• Provide accurate advice, using balance of probability decisions to identify root cause error classification and where appropriate, liability status
• Provide recommendations to Team Manager in more complex cases
• Engage with clients to request further information if required and explain the outcome of error correction/ case reviews in writing and on the telephone
• Provide feedback to operational team leaders on identified errors and error risks, technical advice and support
• Provide technical insight to working groups and stakeholders, collaborating with model office to understand error risk and identify mitigation
• Accurately record error causes and classification for trend analysis and contribute to identification of candidates for continuous improvement
• Support pilot exercises and benefit launches to identify the best methods of delivering services
• Identify discrepancies that may indicate a fraud risk
• Instigate appropriate error resolution methods (such as referral to Debt Management or issuing arrears)
