Lead Analytics Engineer (Grade 7), Data Directorate, Ministry of Justice
Hello!
Welcome to the Data & Analysis directorate at the Ministry of Justice and thank you for taking an interest in this role. We’re looking for 3 Lead Analytics Engineers to join our growing team. The successful candidates will join the Data Modelling and Engineering Team (DMET), although we also work closely with the Data Platform team. A summary of the type of work the teams are involved in can be found in our handbook. We're also hosting a webinar on Monday 2nd September 2024 from 18:00 to 19:00 for anyone interested in learning more about the team and the roles we’re currently recruiting. You can sign up via this link.
This is a great opportunity to work with leading cloud technology and help change the way data is used in the public sector. Analytics engineers at MoJ play a critical role in our mission to put data at the heart of decision-making. We're looking for people with the drive to develop a deep understanding of data needs and data availability across specific areas of the Ministry of Justice. You will work in a team of Analytics Engineers, alongside Data Engineers, to bridge the gap between data producers and data users, developing analytical pipelines and self-service tools to acquire and transform data, making it available on our Analytical Platform.
As a Lead Analytics Engineer, your work might involve:
gathering requirements and translating these into clear deliverables
leading a small team of analytics engineers to deliver derived data tables using dbt
working with data engineers to develop and deploy automated data pipelines
turning needs and opportunities into flexible, quality-assured, dimensional models for use by analysts and data scientists and ensuring dimensions are conformed wherever possible
ensuring content is complete and accurate, and producing summary outputs to demonstrate this completeness and accuracy
providing tools to collect, store and present metadata and documentation that enable people to use data intelligently
setting direction across multiple data domains and being the key point of contact for users
championing these tables as a single version of truth among analysts and data scientists
identifying and resolving data quality / data governance issues
About you
We welcome applications from anyone with the skills we consider to make a good analytics engineer. You may not currently be in an analytics engineering role and that's ok. Many of our team have a background in analysis, data science, software engineering, and much more.
Below, we list a number of skills we are looking for in candidates. If you don't have experience with all of these then that's all right, we get it, it's a long list! We encourage you to still apply and give us the chance to consider your application. A key attribute we're interested in is the willingness and ability to learn; learning and development is something we value and prioritise within our community.
There are some tips toward the end of this advert about how to apply - we strongly recommend you read these, especially if you're new to applying for roles in the Civil Service.
We are looking for people with experience in the following:
SQL
building data and analytical pipelines
working with large relational databases
Python, R or any other programming languages
testing and quality assuring data
supporting others to learn and implement new tools and technologies
It's a bonus if you also have experience of:
dimensional modelling including designing and populating star schemas
working with business intelligence tools
working to improve data quality
working with document-oriented data storage formats such as JSON, XML
mapping processes to support data and service improvement
developing content to support data science / machine learning pipelines
working with data and analytics services in the cloud
workflow orchestration tools, such as Airflow
big data tools, such as Spark and Presto
version control tools, such as git
building automated testing and deployment workflows
working in an agile environment
We make our workplace as inclusive as we can. Find out more about how we support equality and diversity.
Location
We welcome applications from candidates based across the UK. Candidates will have the option of being based in the Leeds or London HQ offices (with flexible working arrangements available) or your nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office: see this map for more details.
Recruitment process
You'll need to apply online by submitting:
an anonymised CV, including career history, responsibilities, and achievements
a statement of suitability, explaining why you're the right person for the job and how you meet the criteria above – this should be no longer than 750 words
There will be an initial sift of applicants, comparing submitted evidence against the ‘About you’ criteria. We’ll assess your application and get back to you in around two weeks to let you know if we’d like to invite you to an interview.
